Working with IAQ members around the world to determine the key obstacles to achieving this UN goal in their region. Identifying the appropriate global quality and innovation thought leaders to find new and effective ways to overcome the toughest obstacles. Working with Quality and Innovation thought leaders to create the next generation of quality and innovation as it applies to healthcare improvement. Organizing a workshop for the Spring of 2018 to assess progress and determine next steps.

Developed and maintain a website including articles, papers and videos of the members of the International Academy of Quality. See IAQPUB.org. Currently developing a commemorative magazine/journal including best articles of the last several years to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Academy. Currently publishing a book of the best articles on quality from the last twenty years that appeared in the IAQ Best of Quality book series.

Combines wisdom of the ages with new advanced strategy, innovation & design tools to help UN SDGs

In 2013, I was asked by the university to help increase the practice, teaching and research on quality and innovation at the University. This project has involved work with university leaders, faculty and staff and student leaders.I have been asked to lead classes on Quality and innovation in April for the ESTEEM program, a master’s program on entrepreneurship. I conducted a workshop for 35 business school faculty in 1989 to help design the features of the new Mendosa College of Business using the 7 Management and Planning ToolsI taught classes and mini courses for MSA non-profit degree program on Quality and Innovation and classes to undergraduate students in the Mendosa College of Business.In 2011, I presented a talk on the history of quality to the Four Horsemen Engineering Club.In 2008, I was the 33rd person to be awarded Honorary Alumni Status for my work with the University. I was humbled to join the likes of Lou Holtz, Ara Parseghian and Cardinal Bernardin who are also honorary alums.Notre Dame Club of New Hampshire*Helped start the Notre Dame Club of New Hampshire with wife Ellen and others. *Served as co-president with Ellen in two different decades. * I assisted Ellen in her work as Chair of the Alumni Schools Committee and in University information nights and student send offs for over 25 years.*I assisted more than ten students over three decades to participate in Summer Service Projects in New Hampshire. *I served on the Notre Dame Senior Alumni Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008. I finished up the work begun by colleagues to launch the Alumni Association hospital program to provide alumni support to those who have accidents while traveling.*I helped publish a text on the life of Fr. Louis Putz C.S.C. Louis is remembered for having put into practice the social gospel message called for in Fr. Theodore’s Hesburgh’s doctoral thesis.

From 1980 to 1985 I studied under W. Edwards Deming and organized over 20 Deming courses throughout New England to help individuals and companies master the importance and methods of continuous improvement and standardization to improve the running of their organizations. We also studied Joseph Juran, Phil Crosby and Armand Feigenbaum and adopted the principle of using the best of the best.In 1983, I took a team to Japan to research the improvement methods taught in Japan by JUSE, JSA, JMA, CJQCA and others to see how they had expanded on Deming’s methods. From 1985 to 1995 I headed up a research efforts of leading manufacturing, healthcare organizations and universities to customize the world’s best improvement and innovation methods to meet the needs of US organizations. From 1985 to the present, I have led the GOAL staff in the development of a series of over fifty pocket guides. These include the basic and advanced quality tools, group skills like teamwork and facilitation; improvement systems like project management, strategic planning, lean, six sigma and various ISO schemes. They also include specialized topics like risk management, safety, value engineering methods and software design requirements.I have developed a three tier model of innovation based on the world’s best and most popular approaches. The basic level uses the 7 management and planning tools 7MP developed in Japan.. At the intermediate level, I use the seven creativity tools 7CT tools which I developed with Helmut Schlicksupp of Germany. They are based on an extensive study of over 200 innovation tools and have been taught in Europe to over 250 thousand business leaders. At the advanced level, I use The TRIZ tools initially developed in Russia to help organizations solve their toughest problems.

Baldrige Examiner - assisted the National Institute of Standards Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in improving criteria and served as a Baldrige Examiner.Lead innovation consultant on Spacecast 2020 tasked with improving US warfare capabilities. I also conducted workshops and quality and innovation for the Army, Navy and Air Force.I conducted workshops for the Center for Disease Control on using Quality and Innovation to improve the health of the nation.I served two governors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Dukakis and Weld) to use Quality and Innovation to improve the running of government in Massachusetts.I assisted the Town of Salem, NH School department, selectmen, Town manager and management team in strategic planning using Hoshin principles and quality and innovation tools.

Proctor and Gamble (see above)Ford Motor Company – Worked in conjunction with Yoji Akao to introduce the Quality Function Deployment System in the 1980s. With several of my instructors, I introduced the Hoshin Kanri method to the Ford vice-presidents in 1995. These systems are still producing superior profit numbers 20 years later.General Motors –Provided quality and innovation training for several divisions and helped solve in two weeks a truck tire wear problem that no engineers had been able to solve for five years.IBM – Introduced the QFD system at world headquarters. One division who focused on the approach was split off as the Lexmark Company which continues to succeed in a competitive industry. I worked with the IBM Management Committee to help the company transition from making products which engineers wanted to make products customers wanted.Hewlett Packard (see above)Intel – Introduced QFD at a time when competition was copying chips and making them at higher quality and lower cost faster and faster. This intervention helped Intel dominate the market for 25 years.John Deere- Introduced process improvement and innovation tools that have helped maintain its leadership position for decades.I worked with the GOAL staff to develop customized Jogger training materials for all General Electric and Philips employees worldwide.Apple computer – Taught problem solving to Apple employees through e-learning around the world. Later GOAL instructors taught advanced innovation TRIZ to Samsung, who used these tools to make the key chips for the iPhone and iPad. Samsung then used the advanced innovation tools from GOAL to develop their own smart phones, and to assist Google in developing and producing their smart phones.More examples are available in the GOAL archives of the Journal of Innovative Management available through our website at www.goalqpc.com.

National Demonstration Project on Quality and Higher Education chaired by John Akers of IBM and David Kearns of Xerox. This project set out to get Universities to Practice Quality, teach Quality and research quality. I co-chaired the Research committee, based on my experience with the GOAL research committee.National Program for major corporations to adopt universities to help them develop a quality focus. I worked with Ford Motor and Ohio State University. As a result of the program Ohio State was able to make dramatic improvements in its graduation rate.I worked with GOAL staff to support Sanford University to develop one of the first major programs in quality improvement in a US university.I worked with GOAL staff and Mt. Edgecombe High School in Sitka, Alaska to use Quality tools and principles to become one of the first to transform a High School using quality principles and tools.With other GOAL instructors, I helped the New Hampshire Extended learning Organization ELO develop a strategic plan using Hoshin tools. This included plans to extend high school students experience outside the classroom, participate in e-learning at the high school and college level and be promoted based on competency rather than Carnegie Units.Universities in Europe Worked with university faculty and students at several European Universities and Institutes including: Technical University in Compiegne, France, the French Research Institute on Quality and Innovation in Paris, Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and the Research Institute in Aarhus, in Denmark.

Institute of Medicine – I facilitated the Summit to redesign medical education for the US in 2002.Holy Family Hospital, Methuen MA – With other GOAL staff, I helped in launching the improvement of Emergency Department Services using the 7 QC and 7 MP tools, process improvement and problem solving methods in the 1980s.Healthcare Research Committee (see above)I worked with Dr. Donald Berwick’s National Demonstration Project to examine the use of industrial quality methods in hospitals. –I worked with Memorial Hospital, in Worcester, Massachusetts to implement advanced quality tools such as Hoshin and Quality function Deployment to improve the functioning of the hospitals in 1988. I think it was the first use of these tools in a hospital situation anywhere in the world.The IHI Triple Aim Program (see above)Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio – Worked with Board of Directors to Improve Quality and Innovation Efforts included an extensive train-the-trainer courses that eventually benefited every hospital in the city.Concord Hospital, Concord, NH – I worked with Liz Keim to conduct several years of lean six-sigma innovation training at Concord, Hospital. Once the concept was proven, they hired their own black belts to run the program.I worked with leadership of Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital to develop quality and innovation strategies. GOAL instructors helped the hospitals implement those strategies over several years.I have worked with several leading pharmacist organizations to increase the role of pharmacists in providing care to patients. This approach has proven to be the best way to help patients with the chronic illnesses of diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular and depression to manage their illnesses. It also was proven in many studies, including one recently by the Medicare Innovation Center to significantly reduce the cost of healthcare for businesses large and small who implement this approach
