Leadership and building great teams has played an important part in my life, both on and off the water. I grew up on the west coast of Ireland and from a young age, the water has been my happy place. For 16 years I lived a life of adventure in the Irish Navy. In 1989 I raced in the Whitbread Round the World yacht race. I’ve been sailing ever since and I’ve competed in some of the biggest races in the world including the Transatlantic, TransPacific, Fastnet and Sydney Hobart.I learned a lot about leadership in the Navy including how not to lead. My first job gave me my first lessons in how not to sell. After I left the Navy I worked in a sales role for a life insurance company. Considering I still work in sales today I’d love to say I was a natural from the start. I wasn’t. I hated the underhanded techniques used to hoodwink people. It went against everything I stood for.Sales has become a dirty word for a lot of people - it doesn’t have to be that way. Selling isn’t something you do to people.
