Responsible for contracts, financial forecasts, resource management, recruiting, office and lab space management with an annual budget of 6 million dollars. Produced OPEX forecasts, reconciled headcount and budget plans and collaborated on the organization’s business plan. Worked with facilities management to plan office and lab space and to coordinate improvements. Established a new process to provide support for 90 day evaluation software. Managed the contracts and relationships with external development groups locally and in India. Managed a software engineering group that developed products for enterprise storage management. Grew the team from 13 to 22 people in addition to establishing an offshore development group in India. Delivered several new products to market and managed the integration of the flagship product into an appliance hardware platform. Built partnerships with internal groups and with Microsoft in support of storage management enhancements. Other major accomplishments included a significant turnaround in group morale and reversing an extremely high attrition rate. Assisted marketing group with technical content and field events. Worked with program management to develop product roadmaps. Supervised a team of 13 engineers in the HPTC group. This team was responsible for the porting and optimization of high performance and technical applications to the Alpha architecture. Also during this period, served as general UI consultant for other groups within Sun, including SunDesk and EDM/PM. Provided UI analysis and feedback.ShowMeHow: Architect of a multimedia documentation product. This product utilized graphics, text, audio, and video to illustrate maintenance procedures. Developed the UI specification, as well as usability, QA and release plans. Managed 3 contractors to do the initial implementation, hired and supervised the graphic designer, coordinated with the Documentation and Usability groups, engineered the media issues including size, performance, and production. Put together the MPEG authoring environment, and supervised the media creation. Coordinated with the various internal product groups including QA, documentation, and release engineering. Maintained the project schedule, bug database, release plan, and documentation.

Senior EngineerDigital Equipment Corporation 1990 - 1994Nashua, NhPC Advanced Development: Proposed and received funding for research in Instrumented Graphical User Interfaces. This advanced development project involved instrumenting the Windows toolkit such that interfaces can record and play back their own sessions. The technique also allowed customization of Windows apps without benefit of their source code. Buttons, Menus, Labels, etc. could be modified for any off-the-shelf application. Used for test scripting, as well as reproducing bugs from the field given the plain text log files. Provided functionality similar to what Mixpanel does today.VUIT Graphical Interface Builder: Developer in the X Windows/Motif group. Responsibilities included design, implementation, and testing of an interactive, drag & drop Motif interface builder. Designed and implemented UI and library components. Managed the beta test programs, and ported product to Solaris. Release Manager for a suite of products on both Sun and Ultrix. Coordinated the individual product teams and created the release, installation, and testing procedures. Member of IEEE1201.3, OSF UEC, OSF UIL/UIMS, and SEI UIMS panel. Co-architected the new “Slinky” model of User Interface Management Systems, widely regarded as the preferred model for future UIMS’s. Presented the model at the ACM conference in 1991.

Senior EngineerPrime Computer 1984 - 1990Framingham, MaX Windows Project: Developed X Windows for the Primos operating system. Responsible for clients, libraries, and toolkits. Designed and tested logical I/O extensions to Primos, improved performance of the TCP/IP libraries, and extended the C libraries to include UNIX functions. Co-developed the corporate User Interface Strategy, and managed the beta test.AI Languages: Ported Prime’s expert system shell from UNIX to Primos. Worked with the University of Salford to design a special Lisp/Prolog hybrid language for Prime's mini computers. Implemented extensions to allow Lisp functions to be called from Prolog programs. Generated product requirements, project plan, functional and design specs. Also responsible for Prime’s Common Lisp product development and served on the ANSI X3J13 Common Lisp committee at the invitation of my former professor, Guy Steele. Electronic Publishing: Responsible for software maintenance and development for the Scribe Electronic Publishing Project.
