Schools of the 21st century must be both interactive and inter-personal. The education must be an exploration of “what is out there” with the intent of developing “what is in there.” Ideal schools are dynamic, engaging, personal, and safe places where people learn how to be people. They are places where people inspire one another to become better tomorrow than they are today. Each person brings to school his/her own background and his/her own experiences. It is through this diversity, and as a result of diversity, that experiences are shared and individuals are strengthened. I am pleased to be involved with a school that strives to teach not only the traditional curriculum but also the skills needed to be effective in an ever-changing world. It is no longer sufficient to simply repeat many memorized facts. People today need to know how to find facts, determine fact from fiction, and then be prepared to apply and utilize the acquired information in new and unfamiliar ways. Schools must be predictable in how they teach children to handle the unpredictable. It is of little to no value to overload educators because what is gained in “efficiency” is lost in “effectiveness”. We should run students through the gauntlet only if our desire is to have them finish. We should walk them through an in-depth, flexible curriculum with teachers who know them, care for them, understand them, and want to teach them, if we want them to learn. I feel honored that I have a daily opportunity to watch adults teach children and then watch the growth and development that occurs within each child over the course of the years. I have literally watched thousands of children grow up and mature and feel confident about our future because of the young adults who are entering the world. Being an educator provides a glimpse into the future and I can confidently state that our future is bright because of the students I have had the privilege of working and learning with.
