About Bob Stilger

I help people, communities and organizations find a new story that they can live into. I'm the Illuminator and former President of NewStories (www.NewStories.org) and the author of "AfterNow: When We Cannot See the Future, Where Do We Begin?" (www.AfterNow.Today).Our old stories of how to live life well are broken. We don't find happiness by consuming as much as we can as fast as we can. The idea that social and economic privledge entitles one to exercise power over others is just plain wrong. The idea that human beings can do pretty much what we want to exploit the natural resources of our small planet is producing chaos and catastrophe. My work is to co-create the spaces and places where people, communities and organizations can create their own future. These spaces are ones where curiosity, respect and generosity are present and permeate the field. My work calls me to North and South America, Japan, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent and southern Africa.I am frequently called to places where change is present. Communities after climate or social disasters. Organizations in a time of upheaval. People who know they must change their lives. I wish I had an easy answer to the question: "what do you do?" I listen; I write; I convene; I speak; I teach; I facilitate generative dialogue and explorations with groups large and small.Life is a learning journey for me. I'm constantly looking for how to make enough of a difference to make a difference. You can find out more about me here: https://newstories.org/team/bob-stilger/

At the end of the last century Robert Theobald and I started using story language because it was a way to reach people's imagination. We said the old story is dying and new stories are being born. We asked people to think about what are the new stories you want in your life? Pretty simply stuff, And it ignited people's imagination. The core of my work is to stay present, wherever I am. I listen to people. I help them listen to each other. I host people into conversations that help them find their own path towards right action. I support them as they change their story, and change what's possible. At NewStories we know that stories can offer people images and insights in a different way than reading more theoretical texts or engaging more intellectually. Stories inform, inspire and invite. They act as a compass and as a path to action that is sourced in our hearts, our minds, our spirit and our hands. The core focus of my work is how people and communities prepare for what's really possible -- before and after disasters. In addition to the devastation the create, disasters are a wake up call and a release. In many places I've heard people say that they've been released from a future they did not want. But that space closes quickly. How do we hold it open? How can people resist the almost irresistible force to return to the old normal? In 2019 my focus is primarily in Northern California with an emphasis on the town of Paradise, where 95% of homes and businesses were obliterated by fires in November, 2018. We are supporting people there using NewStories methodologies and approaches combined with regenerative frameworks and practices. This work in Northern California is a catalyst for developing a Preparing for the Possible Network throughout the Cascadia region and its neighbors.
