Bobuchi Ken-Opurum is a people-centered applied researcher working at the nexus of climate and energy on a range of topics primarily energy equity, climate resilience and adaptation, and indoor and urban health, to drive systemic and sustainable change, specifically in the Global South. She is the Research Director at the Building Electrification Institute (BEI) and leads the research arm to advance equitable solutions for building decarbonization and to address issues around climate resilience, health and well-being, affordable housing, and energy insecurity. Previously she was the director of research at the Texas Energy Poverty Research Institute (TEPRI) where she led impactful research projects that will improve clean and affordable energy access for underserved and marginalized communities. She also developed the Re-HOUSED Multi-criteria Decision Support toolkit that educates and helps self-builders in tropical Global South cities make better and informed decisions about selecting and implementing viable/feasible bottom-up flooding and heat stress resilience design solutions in their housing. She has published numerous journal and conference papers related to energy equity and justice, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency, and resilience of the built environment. She is on the 2023 Forbes 30 under 30 list and is named one of Grist Magazine’s “50 climate leaders driving fresh solutions to our planets biggest problems”.Bobuchi is interested in partnerships and projects that support community and household resilience, waste to energy, development of climate resilient housing, systems, and developing tools to improve climate data accessibility. When not specifically working on the built environment. Bobuchi runs the Second Platform (the2p.co) as its co-founder. Second Platform is an initiative that supports child & women rights, and awareness on sexual assault & violence against women in the Global South. Second Platform uses research & technology to reinvent the notion of victim to survivor, by providing resources to increase independence and safety.

Edf Climate Corps Fellow At The Nyc Mayor'S Office Of Climate ResiliencyEnvironmental Defense Fund May 2020 - Aug 2020New York, New York, UsCapital agencies want to present consistent and transparent monetary quantification of benefits of resilient design elements when making funding requests to the City’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB). New York City’s capital agencies are also interested in bringing equity to the forefront of resilience investments. Consequently, I was enlisted to develop a decision support tool for assigning monetary values to benefits of resilient design practices and guide criteria for capital work needed to adapt an asset or neighborhood to climate change. The research was approached using a four-part process:• Designed an interface with instructions to guide the future development of the GIS integrated decision support tool for city agencies.• Identified more criteria for achieving equity goals in resiliency projects as part of the GIS integrated tool.• Developed a quantitative benefits calculator using Excel. The calculator includes standardized formulas that will help MOR and its intra-agencies quantify resiliency benefits. Excel as a program has a relatively low learning curve and easy to use interface that can be converted to an agency unique tool in the future. • Determined the monetary values of resiliency benefits of a project as it relates to the triple bottom line. -
