Profile bio

About Bob Van Zant

Customer-focused development lead.I have a career-long history of working directly with customers whether they are internal to the firm or external. I leverage my decades of experience tinkering with and building systems of all shapes to build trust with my customers and to understand what they want and need and in many cases to help them understand what they don't need. I quickly deliver short, usable iterations of systems in order to gather feedback.I design, develop and operate pragmatic software systems that solve real problems for real customers. I am proficient in Python, Go and bash and I have professional experience with many more languages. I generally focus on what would be the bottom half of most technology stacks ranging from the operating system up to a network-exposed API endpoint (e.g. a rest or grpc interface).

Listed skills include Python, Software Engineering, Software Design, Cloud Computing, and 14 others.

I built a quantitative research platform on Google Cloud. I was responsible for identifying the first researchers to move to the platform, building trust with them and then successfully on-boarding them. I owned and managed the relationship with our information security team as well as the technical relationship with our Google account team. I designed and built the "bottom half" of the platform that permitted us to scale to 10x the size of our previous QR platform while exceeding our intense information security policies. This was Golang, Python, bash, "cloud architecture" and a little bit of Java. I was the development lead on a team of 5.I'm currently working with application teams across the firm to deliver an infrastructure as a service platform that provides a reliable, repeatable and secure environment for our application deployments to production. This is primarily building Kubernetes controllers in Go and a bit of bash. The controllers are managing bare metal linux boxes and network switches. The platform currently manages the entire lifecycle of operating system + application images on bare metal servers. I am the development lead on a team of 3.

Jan 2018 - Sep 2020

Engineer

Palo Alto, California, Us

Member of founding engineering team. I designed our microservices architecture to include Ubuntu, Docker, Kubernetes and golang running on top of a highly available and secure AWS VPC. In response to customer demand I later designed and led the implementation of packaging our SaaS into a customer-deployable package.I have an intense focus on security and secure engineering practices across the organization. I routinely evaluate my fellow developer’s designs and changesets against the threats and risks that our site and our customers face. In 2014 I gave an expert level talk at Amazon’s re:Invent conference demonstrating secure best practices for cross-account API access within Amazon (https://youtu.be/JbmJ4BSpNqE). Within Bracket’s own walls I implemented projects like 802.1x authentication of our wired Ethernet ports and configured user identification features of our firewall. I am also a member of the security operations team and a participant in external security audits of the product and platform, namely our ISO 27001 certification.I engage with our customers face to face on a regular basis in both pre and post-sales technical engagements. I routinely meet with and have developed professional relationships with individuals at several customer sites. My job in this function is to build rapport and trust with my peers at some of the largest Finance, HR and Media companies in the world. I demonstrate that our product works, works well and was implemented with a strong eye toward security. In 2015 I spent 6 weeks on-site with a Fortune 500 HR firm performing integration and solutions architecture. During 2014, in response to a pattern of customers encountering challenges with their internal network infrastructure teams establishing site to site VPN connections to AWS, I designed, developed and shipped a site to multisite VPN hub feature that we internally nicknamed the VPN Confabulator.

Worked within the Security Technology Business Unit (STBU). Founding member of a brand new team within STBU responsible for building a next generation firewall. I owned application-layer inspection of protocols including an HTTP parser. Key contributor on numerous IronPort projects including the email security appliance, web security appliance, security management appliance and the Anti-Spam engine. Member of architecture team.On the email appliance I owned our third party integrations; at the time this included integrations with Symantec Brightmail Anti-Spam, Cloudmark Anti-Spam, Symantec Anti-Virus, Sophos Anti-Virus and eventually IronPort’s own Anti-Spam and Virus Outbreak Filters technologies. I did early research and development into the problem of image (i.e. gif, jpg, png) spam that led to later productization of these techniques.I developed a product plan based on customer meetings, pitched the plan to executives and after obtaining funding for the project added IPv6 support to the email security appliance.I spent 12 months in India as lead engineer responsible for building out a new engineering team overseas.
