About Kathleen Shanahan
I decided to write my LinkedIn as a story as well as in First Person - we all know we write our own LinkedIn profile, so I am owning it. That is one of the BOCA ways and one of our core values – Authenticity. Here it is – starting with some fun history first…I am a California native with an entrepreneurial spirit. My grandfather, who started as a ditch digger during The Great Depression, created a business and became the first in several generations to own a business. My parents owned their business, my sister owns her business and now, I own my business…BOCA: A Digital PR Agency that delivers Communication | Content | Insight. A graduate of Cal, Berkeley with aspirations to be in the world of Art, I soon realized that I was a great seller, natural storyteller and enthusiastic about technology (who knew). Fast forward 20 years, I’ve had the great fortune to have a wonderful career in B2B technology – within Silicon Valley and beyond. From private disrupters to publicly traded leaders, it has been an incredible pleasure to build brands, drive awareness and help companies be successful. Every day I value the people I work with – clients, employees, partners and overall fabulous humans that touch my life. I am very proud of BOCA and the company it has become. I strive for greatness as does BOCA. We value our partnerships. We value our relationships. We value results.

Vice President
While only a short time at Eastwick, I enjoyed my time and learned a lot from Barbara Bates, a woman I consider a mentor. It is at Eastwick I decided to become a strategic consultant that ultimately led me to starting BOCA. My original intent was not to start an agency. I had just finished reading Tim Ferriss' "The Four Hour Work Week" and decided to buy and live on a boat and take off for around the world while being a high demand marketing communications consultant. And, I did just that...The "Great Recession" came and my more affordable services (not competing on price, just a contractor rather than an agency) came into demand. Next thing I know, comms professionals were of abundance, I would win another small client and needed help - in steps BOCA...my under the radar agency. I like to call this BOCA 1.0. Back to Eastwick, I managed small and big accounts such as BroadLogic and ShoreTel, assisted with new business as well as employee relations.
Vice President
During my second tenure at Schwartz, I came back as a Vice President. That was appropriate as I had just been running corporate communications at a global, public company. It was great (until the regime change). I worked on accounts. I pitched new business. I grew a business unit within the embedded and semiconductor space (which I should have done coming out of Wind River). I won one of the largest B2B tech clients the West Coast had ever seen.I loved the strategic planning and storytelling element of our clients. I also loved the execution. I would always say, "Build A Plan + Deliver Against a Plan = Big Fat Results." (Note: I still say that.)I met even more fantastic people this second go around at Schwartz as that company truly bred incredible communication professionals and fabulous people. I love you x-Schwartzers and you know who you are.
Director Of Marketing Communications
I loved and still love Wind River (now part of Intel). I got to work with amazing C-level executives, drive massive changes within the organization (such as category creation as well as the embrace of Open Source) and managed public relations globally. As the Director of Corporate Communications, Globally, I opted for a Best of Breed agency approach and worked with amazing independent PR agencies in country.I cherish my days at this amazing organization.
Director
My first incarnation at Schwartz was a supervisor prior to being promoted to a Director. I had a wonderful experience at this organization.I worked on many of the big accounts, oversaw Borland and five of its business units, pitched business press, worked on storytelling and just enjoyed the wonderful people I met at Schwartz. I was the "turn around girl," which meant when an account was in jeopardy due to some hiccup or etc..the GM would say, "put Kathleen Shanahan on it and the account will be good in just a few weeks." BTW - that is a lot of pressure and exhausting - maybe the biggest reason I wanted to try in-house - hence the jump to Wind River. Regardless, I enjoyed the work and I enjoyed the people.
Senior Account Executive
I can go on and on about the tactics - yes, I did a lot of media relations as an SAE - that is the primary job of an SAE + writing + assistant to the account manager. And, I killed at it. I love storytelling and I am a great manager and solid writer. But, now as a seasoned veteran, MS&L taught me one thing - I am not sure how I feel about the global, conglomerate model. By no way do I dislike big agency, maybe this wasn't the right fit for me. That said, I am partial to boutiques and truly believe that an independent agency coupled with other great independents can make for an equally strong global team. The conglomerate is not always the answer.
Account Executive
Back in the 1990s, B&O was the premier PR agency representing B2B, High Tech brands in Silicon Valley and beyond. While I felt a bit like a "misfit" at B&O (I was on the older side starting as an Intern as I thought I was going to have a career in the Arts where I started straight out of college), it is at this organization I realized that I love PR...and just as important, I was great at it - not good, great! I picked up on the technology and understood it. I might not have gotten all the technical nuts and bolts, however I did understand the big picture of what these exciting technology companies were changing in the world of yesterday to today. I excelled quickly. There was a Sr. Director that took a liking to me and she put me on every one of her accounts and she truly "schooled me." She taught me how to tell a story, how to work with clients, how to show value out of this incredibly powerful marketing medium. I fell in love with B2B communications and never looked back. I fell in love (from a mentor/work perspective) with this Sr. Director and I followed her to MS&L. Thank You B&O for bringing me into the fold. I don't regret any of those late nights because I learned so much from you.
