In my many years of managing people and leading teams, I have found one style does not satisfy needs. While a leader might have a base style (transactional, servant, transformational, democratic, autocratic, strategic, etc.), there should be a mixture of multiple styles to properly meet the needs. What will work best for the company? What will work best for your team(s)? What will work best for each individual? Leaders must be flexible and properly understand the company’s methodologies, the team's nuances, each individuals’ strengths and weaknesses to maximize talent. What steps will you, as a leader, take to ensure you have maximized your team's performance to align with the company's initiatives. A little history...I spent time in my youth playing plenty of strategic role-based computer games, and I was fascinated with how they worked. I just wanted to understand how an idea for a game can become real. What goes into creating a video game? Who gets to work on those things? That is how I knew I had to learn more about software development. I have never worked for a company that creates video games, but I have learned how to become a true professional in a software development environment. I've had opportunities to code, QA, scrum duties, manage projects, manage people, strategic planning, budget planning, etc. The list of hats goes on and on. This path led me to becoming a leader in my field.In my current role I manage 2 scrum teams that own client facing portals for health insurance. It is a high demand and very fast-paced environment, but offers a rewarding experience providing our clients(members) with always available access to their health, dental, and vision insurance information. I have a diverse group of talented individuals on my team ranging from onshore resources to Nero-diverse resources to offshore resources. My passion used to be creativity when coding applications and solutions for the customer, however, since I have been managing people now for the past 10+ years, my passion has shifted to figuring out the proper leadership approach to maximizing performance, support career growth, build relationships, align to the company's goals and initiatives, and providing the best possible product. It is a puzzle that I find rather challenging, but definitely worth the effort.
