Profile bio

About Jason Bommer

Back in college I enjoyed solving Maxwell’s Equations in the peace and quiet of an empty classroom. This usually took place late at night after everyone had gone. I had time and space to think. I would use the entire blackboard and work problems over and over again until getting it right. Calculus became surprisingly enjoyable, which was odd as I graduated high school an underachieving C student who hardly passed trig. After a slow start with bad grades I confused lots of people when switching majors from drama to physics. Taking this switch so seriously surprised them even more. Those late nights in empty classrooms surrounded by unsolved equations were foundational for my career path - one that I didn't know existed at the time, or perhaps did not exist at all. Today I have a laptop computer that solves Maxwell’s Equations for me. Little did I know back in college that lots of people want these equations solved and one day I would get paid to help them do it. These people are engineers and my customers. They want these equations solved to build circuit boards tiny enough to fit inside a phone or watch. Or sometimes they use them to land a vehicle on Mars or a package drone on your front porch. It turns out there are other equations that can be solved on computers and there are entire companies like mine that are obsessed with this and won’t stop until engineers can solve any problem they want in what little time they have. This is what we call computational physics or physics-based simulation, and it is a field I fell into early in my career while helping design airplanes. We would use computers to solve problems too big for blackboards. Simulation does not replace math and physics or good engineering. Rather it complements these things and raises the ceiling for design exploration. I get to talk about this kind of stuff with high school students as an instructor and with customers as an engineer. It’s hard to explain how satisfying this is, but I love what I do.

Listed skills include Sensors, Rfid Applications, Electromagnetics, Computational Electromagnetics, and 13 others.
