Vp Operations
During the company’s transition to content producer and event producer, manage day-to-day operations for both Melcher Media and FoST including: managing a staff of 15 full-time employees, as well as all freelancers, reporting directly to the CEO on all budgetary and scheduling issues, as well as issues regarding final editorial content and design for approximately twenty projects per year. Primary responsibilities include annual budget preparation and maintenance; individual project budgets and p&l sign-offs; review and approval of all project pitches, proposals, and deal memos; assembling and hiring creative teams for all projects; writing and negotiating contracts; reviewing, invoicing, and collecting outstanding receivables; managing cash flow; reviewing and correcting monthly financial WIP reports; running weekly status meetings; daily review sessions with individual editors to plan and trouble shoot all facets of the editorial and production process, as well as schedules for both current and forthcoming seasons; final approvals on all projects; weekly meetings with CEO to discuss new product development for future lists, as well as personnel issues and needs, social media efforts, publicity, promotion, sales and marketing, and future website and rebranding initiatives; weekly brainstorm meetings with staff to discuss future business development; weekly production meetings with production manager to review budgets and issues for all titles, as well as the FoST conference; primary liaison with distributors (Andrews McMeel Publishing, DK Publishing, Perseus); recruiting, interviewing, and hiring all fulltime and freelance staffing needs; year-end performance reviews and review of current and future goals for all staff members throughout the year; overseeing all planning, logistics, staffing, third party contracts for our annual conference, The Future of StoryTelling (FoST).

Primary responsibilities included the preparation and monthly updating of annual budget for both imprints; weekly budget meetings with publisher, director of sales and marketing, controller, and CEO; making recommendations on final print and bind decisions; overseeing weekly meetings with production department and managing editor; daily review sessions with individual editors regarding all facets of the publishing process for both current and forthcoming seasons; final approvals on cover and interior files; review and approval of catalog copy and sales materials.

Responsibilities included the preparation and monthly updating of annual budget; the preparation of profit and loss sheets for all titles; weekly progress meetings with editors and the production department; the preparation and maintenance of production schedules; overseeing freelance proofreaders, copyeditors, and designers; coordinating release dates with distributors (St. Martin’s Press and Andrews McMeel Publishing) to ensure on-time delivery of all titles within budget. (Number of titles increased from 20 books and 45 calendars in 1994 to 60 books and 65 calendars in 2001.)
