Visual CorrespondentToday Aug 2017 - PresentSingaporeIn my current capacity, I play a bigger role in the planning of visuals across TODAY's digital and mobile platforms. My key responsibilities include:• Collating and curating images for news stories, features, special projects and social media. This is often done in consultation with editors and journalists. • Planning and managing the visual aspects of some news coverage and projects• Providing visual solutions and recommendations to the newsroom• Assigning day-to-day visual coverage• Creating visual posts on TODAY’s Facebook and Instagram accounts• Working with designers to craft illustrations, animations and graphicsI also edited and produced videos, a handful of which were my own ideas. Well-received ones include a video on a shop selling ants and another featuring plants that cost thousands of dollars. Achievements/Highlights• Oversaw the planning and execution of visual coverage for the Trump-Kim Singapore summit in 2018. The photos and videos performed exceptionally across all of TODAY’s platforms.• Coverage of the Hong Kong protests in June 2019, where I juggled both video and photo-taking. -
Senior PhotojournalistToday Aug 2010 - Jul 2017SingaporeAside from covering daily assignments, I proposed and produced photo essays and videos on my own initiative. These include a four-page feature on a group of youths doing competitive diving in Singapore, a spotlight on the Sungei Road Thieves’ market and an inside look at what goes on in an operating theatre during surgery. From 2015, I took on more supervisory responsibilities on the desk. My work began to involve:• Presenting visual options for the newspaper’s front page at editorial meetings, in the absence of the visual editor. This comprised shortlisting/curating the best photos on the wires in good judgement, and sometimes sourcing for more elsewhere when options are lacking.• Planning the team’s daily assignments and visuals coverage in advance• Monitoring and suggesting visuals for all stories on TODAY’s print, online and mobile platforms• Creating visual posts in the form of videos, photo stories and singles on TODAY’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.Achievements/Highlights• Went with a correspondent to smog-hit Riau province in Indonesia in June 2013, at the height of the haze crisis. Our coverage won us the ‘Feature Story of the Year’ award at the MediaCorp News Awards 2014. • Attended the Kalish Workshop conducted at Rochester, New York, in June 2017, which focuses on the editing and decision making aspects of visual storytelling. The five-day experience was led by award-winning faculty and staff members and encompassed daily in-depth discussions and exercises focused on best practices for production and publication of successful still, multimedia and interactive stories. -
PhotojournalistToday Jul 2005 - Jul 2010SingaporeMy primary role was to photograph and edit daily assignments for Singapore’s second most read English newspaper, including but not limited to breaking news, features and sports, in a timely fashion.I worked alone or with reporters to deliver high quality images that effectively illustrate or add value to the stories.Achievements/Highlights:• Won TODAY's 'Photo of the Year' consecutively for 2009 and 2010.• Interviewed renowned Magnum photographer Martin Parr when he visited Singapore and wrote up a three-page read that was accompanied by an exclusive studio portrait taken on the same trip, which I negotiated for. -
