My thesis studies are characterizing glucose starvation-induced mitochondrial-derived compartments (MDCs). An MDC is a large cellular structure that buds from mitochondrial network as a result of a significant organelle remodeling event. We observed many metabolic perturbations that cause this large spherical membrane-rich to form in yeast cells. Specifically, my studies are focused on understanding the required signaling event that triggers MDC formation under acute glucose starvation and determine their metabolic function during this stress. I used Differential Contrast Microscopy (DIC) to examine tissue samples of many species of Boechera and Phoenicaulis to determine their frequency of sexual/asexual gametophyte production. In 2019-2020, I mentored another undergraduate student on embryology techniques for describing the reproduction tendencies in Phoenicaulis which resulted in our co-authorship publications. My mentorship activities included 4 other undergraduate interns/volunteers and 10 high school STEM students. CAAS holds a summer camp for high school students as a way to encourage STEM careers. I mentored a week-long project in microscopy techniques with high school students each summer while working with Dr. Carman. I obtained many of my microscopy and culturing practices from my studies on diverse samples of floral embryos.Throughout my 3.5 years of work with Dr. Carman, I also worked with two of his doctorate students, Dr. Lei Gao and Dr. David Sherwood on their dissertation studies. My initial observations with Dr. Gao in the summer of 2016 concentrated the following studies on metabolic signals that directly regulate meiosis within the female gametophyte organ. I assisted with the examination these pathways by performing tissue culturing assay, embryology, confocal fluorescent microscopy and bioinformatics of transcriptomics data throughout our publication.d The cumulation of 3.5 years of undergraduate studies with USU taught me how to apply observational-based assays to computational -omic results to disseminate hypotheses in cell signaling. I was a Lab Manager at StudentFacturED from 2016-2017 and led the training plasmid project. This was a cloning project to develop plasmid constructs that an instructor could use for examination exercises during the biotechnology courses. Specifically, we were designing 3 individual constructs with differing fluorescent proteins, restriction enzyme cut sites, and antibiotic resistance. The examination was based on the students’ investigative skills to determine which of the 3 plasmids they randomly received by using analytical techniques they learned during their biotech course. I gained experience in lab management and media/sample preparation methods during my time with StudentFacturED.I assisted with the outreach and diversity activities throughout my time with JATC and SLCC. As lab manager, I prepared handouts and materials for all of InnovaBio/StudentFacturED social outreach events. I led multiple class field trips like the one to JATC I shared earlier. I also helped with presenting lectures and workshops to elementary schools and STEM youth conventions. Lastly, I acted as a facilitator for two Expand-Your- Horizons Women in STEM events held annually at SLCC. In brief, I obtained 3 years of lab research, project management and outreach during my work with JATC and SLCC. Show less
