TMS is a good option for most patients who suffer from depression and have not responded to trials of several medications and or were not able to tolerate the side effects of the treatment. They should also have failed to improve with therapies such as CBT.Depression is often a very debilitating condition that has a rippling effect devastating to more then the primary victim of the disorder. My mother was institutionalized for essentially 20 years of her life in France so I have experienced first hand this painful journey starting in my early teens. Sometimes one had to wonder if the toxic effects of the medications were not worse then her depression. She was often on more the six different psychotropics at a time wihtout any appreciable improvement. She would not agree to Electro Shock Therapy but I think she would of easily embraced TMS if it had been available to her.There appears to be alot of other applications to TMS moving forward as all biological systems have evolved under the influence of electromagnetic fields. It turns out that small currents are involved in key events in nature such as fertilization and stem cell proliferation. The Veterans administration is using the device towards finding relief for TBI and PTSD. Through not yet FDA approved for this purpose it is being used off label for a number of anxiety and neurological problems. There is also strong interest for it being used for general brain enhancement.Starting 7 years ago I have attended some conferences in Germany because of my stem cell research interest at the invitation of Dr Timothy Ganey professor at Emory University School of Medicine close friend and mentor.
