I spent the first several years of my adulthood studying languages, and working in the field of accounting. It may seem as if these two things have nothing to do with each other. Numbers and words? What could be more different? I knew I was skilled at both, but found languages more captivating, and wanted to become a linguist. I worked towards this goal for years.Then, in 2008, I lost the use of my dominant arm in a car accident. Staying in school was not an option. I became a stay-at-home mother. For the next several years, my life was devoted tooccupational therapy, raising children, and adjusting to being lefthanded. I continued to helpmy father with his books and taxes, as I had become rather indispensable to the business bythen. I could not write or use a computer very efficiently, so this mostly consisted of meinstructing and him actually doing. As the years went by, I adjusted, and learned how to excel atthese things once again.Being a housewife was never what I envisioned for myself. I love being a mother, but I longed for a career. I decided to return to school in 2018. However, by this time I had three daughters, the youngest of whom was two years old. I was needed at home. I decided to pursue a degree online. It was not possible to study upper-level foreign languages successfully, without in-person interaction. I decided to obtain an accounting degree, with the goal of becoming a CPA.This probably seems like a big change in career goals. What could linguistics and accounting possibly have in common? Now, I am going to tell you a secret: Accounting is a language - the language of business. Translators translate texts from one language into another, so that they can be read by people who don't speak that language. Accountants do this with numbers. When accountants put together financial statements, they allow people who know nothing about accounting to understand the financial position of a company.I opened my own business, Boss Mom Books and Taxes, in 2020, to help finance my education. I specialize in helping small businesses be compliant with all applicable tax laws. I pride myself on my follow-through, attention to detail, and ability to create order out of chaos.I graduated from U of L in May 2022 with a B. S. in Business Administration – Accountancy. I was the Class of 2022 Outstanding Graduate in Accountancy. I began sitting for the CPA exams in August 2022 and completed them in January 2023. I am now seeking to fulfill the work experience criteria as the last step in becoming a CPA.
