I’m passionate about the transformative power of story and myth.Some years ago, I was directing two extremely talented and well-trained actors. They were giving it their all, but the scene was dull and lifeless. When I asked what was causing them to shy away from the emotion of the scene, the fears they described reminded me of parallels in Greek mythology. After I shared those stories with them, their work exploded with life. It was fantastic and deeply moving. Not only that, but later, both actors reached out to me to tell me how profoundly the experience had impacted them. They had become more daring and more vulnerable in their daily lives, making their careers more exciting and relationships felt more intimate. They both said life had become a lot more fun. They said they were somehow taking life both more and less seriously. That’s when I knew I was onto something.Those actors had stopped identifying with the fear and started identifying with the hero who overcame the fear. Something about ancient myth cuts through the mental chatter, separating the signal from the noise. Modern stories can do it too if someone identifies strongly with them.Now, I help midlife professionals tap into their creative powers to finish their dream projects.
