My work centres on the following themes: • Plant species, Phase 1 Habitat and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey & assessment; • Groundwater Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystem (GWDTE) survey and assessment; • Peat & peatland survey & assessment • Ecological Impact Assessment & Habitat Regulations Appraisal / Appropriate Assessment; • Species & habitat management, mitigation and/or restoration; • Deposition effects on habitats and vegetation; • Statistical and palaeoecological approaches; • Project management; • Environmental education; and • Geographical Information Systems.My training and experience as a botanist and land manager has provided me with the opportunity to contribute to research, policy, planning and environmental education related projects for the academic, public and private sectors at scales ranging from the very local to national; over a variety of time spans, from months, to thousands of years. In this role I was responsible for: • two staff; • management of two demonstration moors for farming, shooting, biodiversity and recreational interests that have traditionally been in conflict; • development and delivery of an interpretive programme; • partnership working; and • advice.I enjoyed this opportunity at the inception of the park authority to employ my academic training in a practical, real world setting where I could directly appreciate the aspirations and constraints faced by land owners and managers.

Responsible for contributing to: • a research programme on historical, human-environment interactions in the North Atlantic; • writing and reviewing scientific papers, consultancy reports and grant applications; and • supervision, lecturing/teaching and assessment at all levels.After leaving the university, I continued my involvement in two research projects ('Landscapes circum-Landnám: Viking settlement in the North Atlantic and its human and ecological consequences' and 'Footprints on the edge of Thule: landscapes of Norse-indigenous interaction') until 2011. This included yearly fieldwork in the Faeroes and Greenland where I was employed for my outdoor as well as botanical skills.
