A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Senior Supervisor / Overseer
In the past eight years, I've been responsible for the supervision and oversight (supervision without a legal mandate) of a number of different financial market infrastructures, including central counterparties, governance authorities of retail payments instruments and payments processing institutions ('afwikkelondernemingen' as they are called in Dutch financial supervision law, Wft).Currently, I head the EMIR supervisory college and am lead supervisor of a Dutch central counterparty active in derivatives clearing. Further, I jointly supervise a retail payments processing company and I take part in the G10-oversight of a global financial communication service company.
Serious Game Developer / Programmer / Lecturer
My Master's thesis was on the economic model underlying a simulation game called SIER, which was conceived and developed by Hans Gremmen (Tilburg University) in the mid-1980s. Its primary purpose is didactical: it lets students experience, first hand, valuable lessons in international economics. After completing my studies at Tilburg University, I joined Hans Gremmen in the development of the game. We have been working on it together since then. I have been responsible for (re)programming the game, porting it to the internet and ensuring its operational availability. I'm also involved in the development of the underlying economic model. The SIER game is currently used in lectures at several universities around the world and recently found its way to a growing number of high schools, providing students an early experience in the dos and don'ts of economic policy setting.Furthermore, Hans and I regularly teach an international economics course based on the SIER game at different institutions, most notably Clingendael institute and the Rijksacademie voor Financiën, Economie en Bedrijfsvoering.
Economic Analyst
During my two and a half year brush with 'Europe', I worked at DG.ECFIN, which is shorthand for what is effectively the EC's Ministry of Finance. As a temporary fonctionnaire, I produced quarterly macroeconomic forecasts for the Dutch economy and its public finances and I was responsible for the implementation of the Stability and Growth Pact in the Netherlands. To that end, I assessed the updates of the Dutch stability programme, that the Dutch government have to submit to the EC annually. The international environment was both stimulating and very instructive. I was struck by the diversity of the cultural backgrounds of my colleagues, that came from all EU Member States. More than that, I learnt about the differences and similarities between Belgiums (Flemish) and the Dutch. We may share a language, but sometimes it felt that was all we shared...
Economist - Monetary Policy Unit
After my move to the monetary policy department, my main task was to prepare on a monthly basis a well-founded advice on the monetary policy stance and discuss it with our governor and director monetary affairs.Further, on an ad hoc basis I wrote notes on oil market developments, the euro area cyclical position and euro area cost and inflation developments. I prepared the briefing pack for the 2004 annual report press conference and organised an international economic conference (the Bellagio conference) in 2005.
Economist - Economic Policy Unit
Freshly graduated from Tilburg Univesity and CentER for Economic Research, I started working at DNB in the monetary and economic policy department. My main function was to analyse the economic cycle in the Netherlands. I wrote bi-monthly short topical essays on a cyclical indicator in a Dutch economists periodical (ESB), I participated in OECD meetings and joined a panel of Dutch economists ('Conjunctuurpanel'). I also occasionally wrote a speech for our governor. However, the most memorable moments from this period were the meetings of the Bank's Supervisory Board and the Bankraad (a Dutch ‘Polder’ committee that include, among others, employers' organisations and labour unions). I was tasked with preparing, for each meeting, the Powerpoint presentation on the state of the Dutch and European economy that the governor would present. He insisted that I sat in on the meetings. I am grateful for that (although, I must admit, more in retrospect than at the time).
