PhD project: Sustainable Disruption ManagementWhenever an operational system is exposed to an event, which interrupts or delays the planned operation of the system we refer to this as a disruption. Managing these disruptions in order to return the system to its planned operation is referred to as disruption management. Many operational systems require complex planning in order to make the system run smoothly and at low cost. Such complex systems with many inter-dependable activities exist in various areas, but are especially pronounced in the world of transportation.Apart from often being complex with many inter-dependable activities, transportation systems do also have the inherent property of requiring large amounts of fuel, which is becoming an increasingly expensive resource. This is the reason for incorporating energy considerations in disruption management decisions. We refer to this as Sustainable Disruption ManagementMy PhD Industrial project regarding Sustainable Disruption Management applies advanced analytics to combine flight planning and disruption management. The approach shows several million USD annual savings for a medium size airline and does at the same time help reduce passenger delays in situations with congested airspace. The PhD project did also show how disruption management principles from the airline industry can be applied to Liner Shipping. This research project was carried out in co-operation with Maersk Line and shows very large savings from applying operations research to handle disruptions in the Liner Shipping industry.
