While I wear many hats at Fortress, my two primary responsibilities are listening to and partnering with the community / neighbors to find ways to make the Historic Southside even greater and fundraising for our various programs.
Program Director
As Program Director, I organize the summer schedule, recruit and hire summer staff, and managing camper and counselor disciplinary interactions. Each year, I scrutinize our schedule, activities, and structure in order to better the camp. I also help lead other camp programs, such as our yearlong internship, after-school program, and outdoor education activities.During the summer, my primary role is to facilitate campers and counselors when conflicts and disagreements arise. I also train counselors to effectively work with campers, lead devotional talks, and liaise between the summer staff and the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
Community Coordinator
As a Community Coordinator, my job is to connect residents of traditionally under-served neighborhoods with local nonprofits, churches, businesses, city services, the Abilene Police Department, as well as their neighbors. By helping facilitate more connected neighborhoods, people have more opportunities to not only love their neighbors, but also to meet the needs of their neighbors and have their needs met in return. When neighbors know each other and are invested in one another's lives, communities are safer, more vibrant, and better places to live.

Delivery Driver And Customer Service Representative

Camp Director
The main duties of the Camp Director are organizing the summer schedule, recruiting volunteer counselors, and managing camper and counselor disciplinary interactions. Each year, I was required to scrutinize our schedule, activities, and structure in order to better the camp. I also was in charge of recruiting counselors, processing applications, conducting interviews, and hiring counselors. During the summer, my primary role was to facilitate campers and counselors when conflicts and disagreements arise. I also trained counselors to effectively work with campers, led devotional talks, and liaised between the summer staff and the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
Counselor
For over five summers, my mission was to love campers. Campers typically came from backgrounds of poverty. Age 8-18, they were brought to Camp of the Hills from all over Texas and Oklahoma, mostly from large urban areas like Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, or Oklahoma City. I served a diverse group of campers, not only in terms of age and race, but also with regard to speaking English, behavioral issues, and familiarity with the Bible. For one week, our counseling staff's job was to get to know the campers. We learned about their home lives, their schools, and their problems. By loving campers unconditionally for as long as they were at Camp of the Hills, our aim was to mirror the healing and reconciling love of God.
Missionary Apprentice/Youth Minister
As a Missionary Apprentice, I worked to invite and include non-Christians, mostly college students from the nearby university, in activities at our building. I taught free English lessons, helped coordinate outreach events, and formed relationships with visitors. Additionally, I studied Thai language several hours each week so that I could not only be more helpful as I taught English, but also better understand the Thai people.Near the end of my time in Thailand, I was asked to start a youth group among the teens of two congregations. In this capacity, I taught Bible studies, organized group worship times, and coordinated bonding experiences during the week.
