In May of 2023 my accounting firm was sold to CSI Accounting & Payroll. CSI has a highly successful office in Minneapolis and now has a Columbia MD location. As a part of the transaction I became a (very!) minority partner in CSI. Duties include Financial Planning, Referrals and Liaison for Community and Non-Profit Outreach.

When I was a teenager in Ohio, I had an egg route (yep, selling eggs door to door!) that seemed to fuel my two eventual passions: helping people and small business. After college and ten years of small business, tax and accounting experience, I founded Bowman & Company with those two passions in mind. Over the past 29 years that passion has only grown stronger and the focus sharper: Helping small business owners reduce their taxes and increase their net worth in an environment of responsible, timely and accurate recordkeeping. I wanted Bowman & Company to provide its clients with a one-stop source for a small business owner’s solutions. Everything from bookkeeping and payroll to tax and financial services. Many accountants work with their clients on a “client dependent” rather than an “accountant dependent” basis. In other words, their approach is to “call us when you need us and bring your information in at the end of the year”. Instead, I wanted to leave nothing to chance when it comes to taking care of our clients, since business owners aren’t always aware of the wide range of potential tax and financial issues. PASBA is a nationwide organization of approximately 200 accounting firms that are small businesses in their own right and also dedicated to serving the needs of their small business clients. PASBA is a completely volunteer organization that holds semi-annual national conferences in addition to other educational programs aimed exclusively at helping its member accountants serve the unique needs of nearly 10,000 small businesses.After I moved to the Washington DC area and was building my accounting business, I attended a PASBA conference and was attracted to their collective passion for helping small businesses. I was immediately compelled to volunteer and contribute to the growth of this organization. My PASBA involvement began in 1996 highlighted by a number of achievements, including: ► Named PASBA’s Accounting Firm of the Year (2007)► Serving on the Board of Directors (2007-2010)► Awarded PASBA’s most coveted recognition “The Lifetime Achievement Award” (2011)► Elected to a 3 year board term. (2013-2016) ► Elected President (2015 – 2016)Along the way I was a major contributing author to our Blueprint for Success series that was launched in 2005. Over time it became a 9-binder set containing 2,300+ pages and is essentially a small businesses roadmap and reference guide for building and operating an accounting firm. I also founded Blueprint University – a 12-hour course that is taught to all incoming PASBA member accountants on a semi-annual basis. I developed the course materials and have conducted classes for the entire program from its inception (2009) until 2013. Currently I teach 4 hours of the course and I’m responsible for keeping the course material current and finding other instructors. I have served on nearly every committee and am a frequent speaker at National Conferences.

I got my start in Public Accounting at Reznick working on Real Estate related clients as well as small business clients. They are a great firm and I had a tremendous experience there. I had supervisory audit and tax responsibility for various clients. In addition I had complete responsibility for the billing and collection of fees and supervision of up to six staff accountants. I enjoyed the work with my small business clients and that propelled me to open up my own firm exclusively serving small businesses.

DeBartolo was a major developer of commercial shopping centers in addition to owning a number of professional sports teams like the San Francisco '49ers.I was responsible for all accounting and auditing functions for a number of separate real estate entities including large regional malls, both operating and in various stages of development. I prepared financial statements for use both internally and externally and collaborated with financial representatives of several joint venture partners, including JC Penney & Equitable.

While attending college I worked four summers at Standard Oil (now BP). I began working in a service station where I pumped gas for customers and did minor car repairs. The next three summers I drove a Courtesy Car on Ohio’s interstates looking for people who were having car trouble. For no charge and absolutely no tips I would assist stranded motorists with needed repairs and get them on their way. This job was immensely satisfying and really fueled my passion for helping others.Upon graduating from college I became a Service Station Supervisor and was given a territory of approximately 16 service stations. Each service station was its own independent small business. I supervised and assisted the small business owner in the areas of bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, marketing and business operations.
