Head Of Infrastructure And Operations (Insurance)

London, London, Gb

I led hybrid onshore / offshore teams of permanent staff working alongside augmentation partners based in India. My responsibilities included Cloud Engineering, Database Management, DevOps, Information Security and Service Management functions as well as ownership of cloud finance tracking and cost recovery as the company migrated from on-premise systems to Azure cloud. My key achievements included: Design and implementation of a new cloud target operating model incorporating infrastructure delivery as well as BAU support and maintenance for 24/7 internet facing quote and buy systems. Defined and led a rapid delivery project to mature the divisions’ cloud security, operational stability, resilience and disaster recovery. This project Introduced enterprise class firewalls, anti-virus / anti-malware, zone resilient infrastructure and full DR capabilities with accompanying processes and procedures for all cloud workloads. Devised and managed the cloud operational budget tracking system, providing monthly spend analysis as well as a six-year forward forecasting capability for BAU cloud spend up to 2027 including all licensing and infrastructure spend in the Azure cloud environment. Worked as part of a cross-divisional team to evolve the DevOps and automation capabilities for cloud-based systems delivery and management. this team Increased the adoption of infrastructure as code and championed the drive towards immutable infrastructure. Researched, proposed and implemented a change to the reserving method of cloud resources thereby avoiding a six-year overspend of over £7 million. Led a program to design, deploy and manage Azure ‘landing zones’ provision for all business divisions’ Azure workloads. This subscription-based foundation ensured consistent approaches to identity management, policy enforcement, information security, event logging, cost reporting and systems monitoring across the whole of the groups’ Azure cloud ecosystem.

Interim Head Of Infrastructure

London, Greater London, Gb

I joined Investec W&I to deliver a transformation of the Infrastructure teams and technology in a short period of time. I inherited an organisation which was providing a poor user experience to the business with instability caused by both underlying systems issues and poorly planned change. Following a short review of the highest priorities, and to make immediate tactical improvements to this, I implemented basic ITIL based methodologies and defined targeted changes to both process and technology which delivered tangible results whilst clearly defining KPIs wherever possible to demonstrate the improvements made. More strategically I carried out a full review of the technology in use (utilizing both existing staff, new hires and 3rd parties where required) and devised a long term programme of change required to bring the organisations technology (and its associated processes and documentation) up to the required level of configuration and capacity to meet the business requirements for stability and performance. In my time at Investec I also delivered: • The creation and implementation of a new change control process for all Service Delivery change. • A Review of all 3rd party and supplier infrastructure spend. • A programme of tactical improvements designed to improve the resilience of the underlying infrastructure technology including: o Delivery of a new Citrix PVS image build providing far improved stability and performance. o A Health check and remediation plan for Software Defined storage solution. o A Health check and remediation plan for the Citrix solution. • The creation of a multi-year programme of technology change to address stability and performance issues across infrastructure. • A change in Cisco maintenance provider, saving over £80,000. • A detailed gap analysis of end of life networking technology. • A complete review of the WAN routing. • The major incident management of a storage failure affecting all systems.
