About Boyd-Batstone, Paul
Paul Boyd-Batstone, Ph.D., retired as Interim Associate Dean for Baccalaureate and Credential Programs at CSULB College of Education August 13, 2019. From 2012-2018, he served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Teacher Education at California State University, Long Beach. He has also directed the Masters of Arts in Education option in Reading/Language Arts. He coordinated the methods course EDEL 442 Teaching and Learning the Language Arts, K-8 for pre-service teaching credential candidates. Paul served as Board Member of the California Reading Association and Editor of the California Reader. His most recent books are Teaching ELLs to Read (2015) Routledge/Eye on Education; Helping ELLs Meet the Common Core: Assessment and Practical Strategies (2013) Routledge/Eye on Education; and Differentiated Early Literacy for English Language Learners: Practical Strategies, Pearson Education/Allyn & Bacon.He served on the CSULB Provost's Task Force on Instructional Technology. He chaired the University Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology at CSULB and chaired the University Awards Committee. He worked in public schools for over 30 years teaching in all elementary school grades; and he was instrumental in the initiation of innovative bilingual programs including Spanish/English Gifted and Talented, and the first Title VII Cambodian Khmer/English programs in the State of California.He served on the International Reading Association's Language Diversity Committee and has served as Chair (2004-2008) of International Reading Association’s Commission on 2nd Language Literacy and Learning. He has also worked with Guatemalan teachers through the IRA affiliate Guatemalan Reading Counsel.He worked with teacher educators at Normal Schools in Mixco and Nebaj, Guatemala in a collaborative educational development project with ADICOGUA, a Guatemalan non-governmental organization, with funding by GTZ, a German Foundation.
