CVU (a joint venture between Colas, Volker Highways and URS) was awarded the London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC) for central London by Transport for London (TfL).Boyd undertook the Site Management during construction of one of the first schemes of the contract, a 5.1 kilometre section of the Barclay’s Cycle Superhighway Route 5 from Victoria Station to New Cross Gate. Construction activities included 22 civil works sites, 1.6 kilometres of full carriageway resurfacing, six junctions requiring traffic signal upgrades, additional and improved traffic signage and substantial resurfacing along the remaining 3.5 kilometres. Tasks included: site management and supervision; preparing, implementing and monitoring all safety, quality and environmental documentation; preparing and reviewing construction activity programmes and liaising with the client, sub-contractors, and local authorities.The complexities of working on London's Roads, along with the involvement of all stakeholders and the continual political difficulties encountered, made for a rewarding practical completion and a satisfied client.

Boyd provided the Site Engineer services during construction of 300 metres of new private access road, retained approximately two metres above existing ground levels, around the United Kingdom’s greenest building, the Brent Civic Centre, Wembley, London. Tasks included: calculations and setout for drilling, placing and concreting 122 steel ‘kingpost’ piles to the correct line and depth; installing a vacuum waste collection system (ENVAC) five metres below the road surface; installing a stormwater retention system of 1050 millimetre diameter holding pipes; and setout/construction of all other services. Other tasks included: implementing a survey control network; monitoring site works; preparing asbuilt drawings for presentation to the client; quantity calculations; inspection and testing; and quality assurance. Once site works were physically complete, Boyd assumed the responsibilities of scheme close out and practical completion. Prior to that, Boyd was a Site Engineer on Olympic Park, Stratford, London. He completed the following projects:Construction of the IBC Pedestrian Bridge which consisted of: precise setout and construction of the foundations; precise setout of the piers; deck lift into place by 500 tonne mobile crane; design/assembley of the stair layout; and addition of the bridge cladding. Staged construction of the North Security Plaza park entry consisting of deconstruction and reconstruction of the vehicle searching bays whilst undertaking resurfacing in stages, ensuring the plaza remained operational 24 hours a day. Survey, design and construction of South Security Plaza pedestrian area consisting of raising site levels, preparing sub-base and laying kerbs and block paving.Tasks included: infill control networks for accurate site setout; planning and monitoring site works; pavement design; recording and preparing asbuilt data for presentation to the client; quantity calculations; inspection and testing; and quality assurance.

Boyd began his career with the medium sized multi-disciplinary Glasson Potts Fowler as a Graduate Surveyor. The company was then bought by Duffill Watts and was ultimately rebranded as CPG with offices throughout New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia. (Note: CPG then became Spiire and is currently known as Calibre Consulting)During his five years, Boyd became proficient in all survey related tasks including cadastral, topographic, as-built and engineering surveying. He gained a strong understanding of contract management and observation. Being a multi-disciplinary company, Boyd also acquired a solid background in land planning and civil engineering design for land development which lead to him passing his professional examinations to become a full member of the NZIS.Additional skills were gained in the extensive use of 12d, AutoCAD and both Leica and Trimble equipment.
