With nearly three decades of experience, Barbara Patterson Oden has served as a classroom teacher, literacy and gifted resource teacher, instructional coach, district supervisor of professional learning, elementary school administrator and adjunct collegiate faculty. She is also an educational consultant with Learning Forward and President of its Virginia Affiliate. As an award winning educator, she is a sought-after presenter and professional learning facilitator, having delivered numerous state and national conference presentations and several keynotes."The most revolutionary act of educational equity is teaching EVERY student to read." It is this belief and passion for creating more equity in education that drives her work as a Manager of Educational Partnerships in Virginia and DC for the non-profit, Collaborative Classroom. In addition to supporting district and school literacy and SEL initiatives, she has collaborated with other literacy-focused organizations to host literacy advocacy events for communities across the state.Barbara is a graduate of The George Washington University with a Masters of Art in Education and Human Development with focus in Educational Leadership and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education with a concentration in English. As a lifelong learner, she has supplemented her professional growth and expertise through earning certifications in Google for Education Educator Level 2, Courageous Conversation Beyond Diversity I, and Learning Forward’s Academy, a multiple year leadership program. Outside of her career, Barbara actively supports the social and emotional development of school-age girls in her community having volunteered for over a decade with the Hampton Roads, Virginia council of Girls on the Run, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization designed to enhance participants' social, emotional and physical skills to successfully navigate life experiences. While she began as a coach for multiple after-school sites, she has also served on the Board of Directors for the local council. Lastly, she is an active member in her local charter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Incorporated and has served as the chapter’s Technology Chair in support of the chapter's many youth and adult development and wellness programs. She resides in Chesapeake, Virginia with her husband, Jesse, and their fur-baby, Chase, where she loves to golf, read countless fiction and fantasy books and travel the world.
