Sportico was launched by Penske Media with one goal: bring top-notch, objective journalism to the sports business world, which had been dominated by pay-for-play trade magazines. I joined ahead of launch to set the standard for finance coverage, building the beat from the ground up, dominating coverage of the sports-heavy SPAC rage, developing our sports stock market index and detailing how investors of all stripes want into sports, sportstech and sports-adjacent investments. The quality of work by our small, driven staff means Sportico is now carried by Apple News, Yahoo and Bloomberg.

I’ve had two long, successful stints as a full-time freelance writer and editor. In other words, that means I excel at developing ideas editors want, writing copy that sings and always hitting deadlines and project goals. My journalism work splits into two buckets:Writing & Reporting: Writing stories and features for the premier league of publications, including a run as “Term Sheet” columnist for Fortune.com, contributor to Inc., Washington Post Magazine, Esquire and a regular contributor to Forbes and Forbes.com, including creating the “Who Got Rich This Week,” an often-viral look at the business world’s big winners. It’s a column that continues at the publication to this day under other writers. Personal finance, the stock market, entrepreneur profiles and wine and travel lifestyle have been my core topics.Product Development: I created and edited stock investing newsletters, crafting products people pay for while demonstrably beating competitors and benchmarks.Between 2007 and 2012, I was founding editor of two newsletters with Cabot-Heritage Corp., a long-established respected newsletter publisher. Cabot Green Advisor guided individual investors and wealth managers through the then-emerging world of cleantech investing, while Cabot Global Energy Investor focused on the broader world of energy. My portfolio outpaced the S&P 500 by 34 percentage points over the publications’ runs, posting a double-digit positive return in a bear market. Meanwhile competing newsletters and all cleantech mutual funds and ETFs lost money.In 2019 I began self-publishing ESG Investor and during 2021 and 2022 it was marketed by Cabot under the title Greentech Advisor. The publication guided subscribers on investing in cleantech and ESG stocks and funds using a ‘real money portfolio’ (that is, I put my money where my mouth is). The portfolio averaged a 39% return over four years – with no negative years – in a bull and raging bear market for alternative energy companies.

My work as a full-time freelancer also includes two additional buckets:Project Management: In cooperation with publications and corporate clients, I produced explainers, guides, surveys and white papers large and small on technology, investing, financial planning and lifestyle. My work has been on behalf of three dozen Fortune 500 companies and for special ad-supported sections of publications including The Wall Street Journal and Forbes. Highlights include planning and writing all the editorial for a mini magazine on retirement planning for a wealth management firm – they were so pleased with it they did 1 million reprint run to give to all their clients. I also served as editor for contributor-driven publications, where I guided and edited non-journalist contributors.Thought Leadership: I’ve translated the brilliant ideas of experts in economy, finance and technology as ghostwriter for first-person magazine articles, op-eds, contributed columns and books. I’ve worked with celebrated entrepreneurs, hedge fund managers, global business line chiefs, academics and a former Presidential Cabinet member. When Bloomberg wanted to create a high-profile news team that would get the Bloomberg name known outside of finance, they hired me as the senior reporter to help develop and run Bloomberg Billionaires. Within a year of wildly popular stories (I unearthed how the developer of The Villages made billions in tax loopholes and pickleball courts and found a happy hour beer billionaire in rural Pennsylvania) we were called the most successful launch by Bloomberg since they launched Bloomberg News itself – by the editor who started the news service. Over the six-year run of the Billionaires team, I developed reporting methods and research methodologies that made Billionaires the most effective and accurate wealth list around, produced regular stories that got picked up widely around the world, conceived and tackled enterprise projects and mentored junior reporters.

As a staffer during Forbes Magazine’s reign as the best business magazine around, I packed the investing, entrepreneurs and technology departments by regularly generating my own story ideas and getting buy-in from editors. Among my best-read: I found the overlooked genius who sparked the dollar store industry, showed how mathematics that developed nuclear bombs was being applied to retail stores and how readers could invest in Broadway plays, Napa Valley vineyards and the best mutual funds. I also spent two years as primary reporter for the flagship Forbes 400 issue, where I detailed how Mark Cuban made his money, calculated the wealth of Martha Stewart and verbally sparred with a high-profile real estate developer who would eventually be president.

Tasked with owning the Orange County, California, bankruptcy beat based in distant Jersey City, I lapped all competitors, scooping the majority of more than two dozen legal settlements while a beat reporter for the joint Associated Press-Dow Jones Public Finance Newswire. Later, as a commodities market reporter, I wrote about a myriad of markets, from sugar to gold to oil for Dow Jones Newswires, earning dozens of bylines in The Wall Street Journal and in Barron’s.
