Brendan Madden founded Tom Sawyer Software in 1992, and has since developed the company into a leading global provider of high-performance graph and data visualization and analysis software. Under his expert guidance, Tom Sawyer Software has received accolades for excellence in component-based software technology development from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. Brendan brings his highly specialized knowledge of the software industry and other industry sectors to make invaluable contributions to the business strategy, operations, product direction, marketing, and sales of Tom Sawyer Software. With thirty-five years of experience in the graph field, Brendan is one of the world's foremost experts in graph and data visualization, graph layout, and graph analysis. He is also an expert in user experience, and design, concepts, and detail work. Prior to founding Tom Sawyer Software, Brendan was employed at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, the IBM Santa Teresa Laboratory, and Vitalink Communications. Brendan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Ithaca College. He attended graduate school in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University.

I worked on remote bridge and router development. I worked primarily on a complex port of a C code base built for Motorola 68K to a more fresh, modern, and redesigned ANSI C code base designed for the AMD 29K architecture.

I worked for four summers during college and for a year after college in the Data Communications group at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York. I worked on network topology for new OS/2 Presentation Manager clients being designed for future versions of NetView. The layout work I did was primarily to draw SNA and APPN networks.Then later I worked on the AD/Cycle project at the IBM Santa Teresa Laboratory in Morgan Hill, California. For this project, I worked on directed graph layout with many cycles and both global and incremental layout support. The nodes were typically entities, and the links were typically named relationships between entities. This software supported fixed node position constraints as well. As part of this work, I also made ANSI C software libraries and documentation that supported a number of other IBM efforts.
