Responsible for designing, implementing and operating an internal service which provided a consistent, real-time event stream of changes from 3 million email inboxes. This service powered a wide variety of products across the company including an external developer API (Context.io), business facing email analytics products and internally developed consumer applications. Developed primarily with Go, Kafka, Roaring Bitmaps, gRPC, DynamoDB and S3.Made significant cost, stability, performance and scaling improvements to the Context.IO email API.* Migrated a large MongoDB cluster (>15TB of storage) from a bespoke sharding implementation to MongoDB’s built-in sharding.* Redesigned database schema to better match usage patterns which allowed us to reduce storage costs by over 50% and reduce API response times.

Hired as the second software engineer at a small start-up. Developed consumer facing email products (OtherInbox and Unsubscriber) using Ruby on Rails. Responsible for implementing backend email account syncing using IMAP and Yahoo APIs. Supported rapid user growth by scaling the product from a single MySQL instance to a sharded deployment. Optimized MySQL schema and queries to reduce costs. Developed data feeds for external partners using Redis and Hadoop. Rewrote the email parser in Ruby’s widely used mail library to achieve a 7x speed up.
