I am an experienced Software Engineering leader who loves tackling organizational, product, and technology challenges to deliver transformative value for customers and businesses. I create and thrive in supportive organizations that value a mission-driven, results-oriented culture. I have found that the difference between success and failure can often result from misalignment, and I look to align organizations across three areas: * Aligning technical roadmaps to execute a successful product and market strategy * Aligning team members with each other and partners for a growth-minded and productive culture * Aligning values to ensure an inclusive environment where everyone can thriveAt Google, I have led Engineering teams in three product groups: * Mobile application feature and infrastructure development (Google Maps) * Cloud infrastructure (GCP Apps and Developer tools, compute & storage management) * Web application infrastructure (Gmail, Google Accounts)I have experience with full-stack distributed system engineering, including low-level production infrastructure, public Cloud building blocks, multi-tier application design, developer tools, and consumer UIs. I have led teams sized from 10 to 100 and I attend to the entire SDLC: requirements, design, testing, production readiness, and support. I have led or participated in numerous diversity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives in order to better serve underrepresented members of our community. Thanks for viewing my profile. Please reach out if you'd like to connect. I look forward to hearing your ideas and sharing my experiences.

Google Global Network - Aiops Engineering ManagerGoogle Mar 2024 - PresentMountain View, Ca, UsI am leading a team focused on bringing AI solutions to Google's backbone network. Bringing together ML techniques with the wealth of operational and planning data about the network allows us to deliver data-driven solutions. We are looking to improve the reliability and efficiency of the network through AIOps that empowers (and in some cases, removes) humans in the loop of network management and planning. -
Google Maps - Android Engineering ManagerGoogle Jul 2018 - Mar 2024Mountain View, Ca, UsTeam size: 40I led the core platform engineering team for Google Maps' Android client. We built the UI, codebase, and performance primitives used by Android Maps and partner products like the Google Maps Platform SDKs, Maps for WearOS, and Android Auto. We also ensured the timely release of Maps and Wear Maps to the Android Play Store. We launched many visible changes including dark mode, Maps' 15 year anniversary refresh, and enhanced large-screen landscape UI as well as countless performance and developer improvements. -
Google Cloud Platform - Developer Tools - Engineering ManagerGoogle 2015 - Jul 2018Mountain View, Ca, UsTeam size: 45I led a group of several teams delivering developer solutions for GCP. I was a founder of the effort to bring idiomatic client libraries and GCP developer tooling to seven critical programming languages that were previously underserved in GCP. Via my talented leads, we launched Google's internal bug tracking tool to external users (http://issuetracker.google.com) and brought Cloud Shell (http://cloud.google.com/shell) to GA. -
Google Cloud Platform - Google App Engine - Engineering ManagerGoogle 2014 - 2015Mountain View, Ca, UsTeam size: 50I helped App Engine grow revenue significantly over this period, while maintaining and modernizing the serving stack which was under serious growth pressure. -
Technical Infrastructure - Engineering ManagerGoogle 2011 - 2015Mountain View, Ca, UsTeam size: 50I led a variety of projects through several years, several reorgs, and the emergence of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as a critical business for Google. When I led them, my teams (50 people):* Launched a complete API modernization and rewrite of the production alerting stack.* Rebuilt the way Google provides its production serving Linux OS image and moved the build process to be from source (previously it was a collection of disparate packages and binaries).* For the production datacenter asset management system, launched a v2 rewrite and migrated all users.* Led a 2-year effort to deprecate a major infrastructure storage service, and seamlessly migrate its users (most Google products) to new libraries and tools.* Launched a new software package distribution system and a new configuration data distribution system. These systems, used by most Google products, led to much higher availability and stricter change management (more reliability) for the data served. -
Gmail / Google Accounts - Engineering ManagerGoogle Jul 2007 - 2011Mountain View, Ca, UsTeam size: 25I led part of the Gmail and Google Accounts SRE teams during a period of explosive growth. My teams led or contributed to:* Launching a v2 storage system migration for all of Gmail's user data.* Taking Gmail out of Beta by meeting a set of product goals. It had been in Beta for 5 years.* Supporting XX% YoY user growth for both services.* Bringing Gmail on to common Google infrastructure services. Prior to my involvement, Gmail used non-standard serving infrastructure. This led to capacity inefficiency, difficulty sharing resources, and unsatisfying side effects.* In 2011, reducing Gmail's serving cost by XX% YoY while achieving 99.99% availability. -
Research InternIbm May 2006 - Aug 2006Armonk, New York, Ny, UsAs part of the Natural Language Processing / Knowledge Management research team, I developed a desktop application in Java (COALA - http://www.aaai.org/Papers/Symposia/Spring/2007/SS-07-06/SS07-06-003.pdf). This application assisted researchers in their attempts at document co-reference recall as part of their knowledge graph. -
