I've done both the large organization CIO type job, and the startup CTO type job. So, from the CIO side I've got things like stakeholder engagement, risk management, project and portfolio management, vendor and contract management, strategic planning and lots of leadership.On the CTO side, I am very hands on in the code and in the cloud. I enjoy connecting things together, so building strong back-end architectures is my forte. I prefer Mongodb to any kind of SQL, but can do both. I am stronger in AWS, but have also used GCP and Azure. I love typescript/nodejs/react, but have also coded in python, java and perl. I know how to build up a virtual server environment on prem or in the cloud, but very much prefer a serverless architecture, especially built in and around API Gateway/Mongodb and CloudFront/S3. I know data environments, especially Snowflake. I've done some AI work and understand how it all comes together, especially with the AWS tools in Bedrock and Sagemaker, leveraging vector databases in Pinecone, Atlas or Snowflake. We haven't quite reached the Nirvana of Continuous Integration, but I know how to build up the pipelines in AWS and with GitHub Actions, and I know what's needed (and we're getting closer...) on having the testing automation to allow constant confidence in the code.I've also been deeply involved in the product management and design side as well. I understand the importance of balancing feature needs with tech debt and UX needs. I love using Agile Scrum, with SAFe for cross-team and longer term planning, but understand that this needs to be done carefully, and in a way that empowers rather than enabling top-down decision making. Process frameworks are a tool, not a religion. I encourage teams to have a passion for delighting customers, and for tech leads and product managers to have direct customer interactions regularly.I love transformations, and helping teams and individuals to realize their potential.
