I'm a newspaper reporter who most recently covered the war and related stories in Ukraine for the Kyiv Post in the fall of 2014 and January-February of 2015. I have also published five books (as writer or editor) and my website is bradbirdbooks.ca. I am not on Facebook at the moment. I grew up in Toronto but lived in Manitoba most of my life. I married lawyer Karen Stewart on Aug. 4, 2006. We live in Parksville and have two cats, Buddy and Kali. I got them from Brian Jasper at Lake Metigoshe about 1999. I trapped fur there for six years and walked to Churchill in 2005 in my Border to the Bay trek to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. I also ran for the Green Party federally in 2006 in Brandon-Souris riding. I love to canoe and have paddled most of the Mississippi as well as the Hayes and other routes in Manitoba. I learned a lot about trapping from Dave Wall and Ernie Goodon at Lake Metigoshe near Deloraine. I was born on Jan. 27, 1959 in London, Ont., to my air force pilot father, Clayton Bird, and my homemaker mom, Doris Bird, both now deceased. Grew up with brothers Bil (deceased), Bob, Bruce (an antler carver, see his website brucebirdantlercarver) and sister Kim, of Winnipeg. Best friends as a boy in Downsview, Toronto, were Mark Davis, Luis Kay, Frank Jarko and Peter Petriglia, among others. Most of my adult life I have spent writing news, often from war zones in Western Sahara, Kosovo, Turkey, Georgia (near Chechnya) and now Ukraine. It's important work and I happen to be good at it.
