During this period I was responsible for the management of a team of environmental scientists and engineers of which stormwater management is a particular focus. Working in very close association with our Principal Water Engineer and RPEQ, I provided day-to-day guidance and mentoring on stormwater management and its practical implementation within the urban environment.The Water team was made up of six (6) engineers and scientists focused on stormwater and flood plain management. As the manager I assisted the team in meeting their goals by providing specialist technical advice, organising workloads, ensured the staff were well trained and informed and by setting the team standard. Most importantly I tried to ensure that a positive team climate was created, where team members were encouraged to do their best, ask questions if not sure of an issue and contribute to team discussion. I was responsible for the delivery of annual budget of $2 million for the water discipline. This required the supervision of projects and staff, business development and financial accountability.

Over this two (2) year period, I was responsible for the management of a multi-disciplinary team, overseeing disciplines including Water Engineering, Traffic and Transport Engineering, Acoustic Engineering, Sustainable Engineering and Environmental Science. I supervised a team of engineers and scientists specialised in undertaking engineering and scientific assessments to support urban development projects. As the manager of the section I had the responsibility of scoping new projects and preparing tender submissions and fee proposals. In preparing these documents I demonstrate my ability to identify the technical elements within a project that require analysis and the resources needed to undertake the task. This required the ability to identify accurately what is required by a client before developing a detailed scope, resource allocation, timeline and budget.

During this period I formed a small consulting company which specialised in environmental engineering and sciences catering to the Gold Coast development industry. This venture gave me an opportunity to develop my business skills and was rewarding and profitable. My business venture ended when I was enticed to join VDM Consulting.

As the Supervising Environmental Planner I was responsible for a team of engineers and scientists tasked with the role of assessing development applications submitted to Gold Coast City Council. The major focus of this role was to ensure that environmental constraints where adequately addressed and developments were designed so as to meet Local, State and Federal government environmental policy.The role also involved ensuring that engineering designs to manage stormwater were appropriately incorporated into development design so as to achieve practical and sustainable outcomes. Working within this role developed by management skills, allowing me to gain experience as a team leader and mentor to junior staff.
