I began my career with a BSc in Electronics Engineering Technology, working in industry and developing custom electronics and software. My work at the time, in the early 2000s, included developing and testing interfaces for Vehicle Control Stations for unmanned air, water and ground vehicles. In an effort to expand my skillsets into the field of environmental sciences, I then completed a PhD at the University of Alberta. My doctoral research integrated my background in electronics via the development and deployment of field instrumentation that monitored the ice flow and hydrology of Arctic Glaciers, yielding data which I used to interpret glacial system dynamics in an environmental context under a changing climate. During my PhD I gained many months of experience deploying, operating, and maintaining sophisticated instrumentation and off-grid power systems in remote and harsh Arctic environments. I also acquired skills in remote sensing and data processing & interpretation of large environmental datasets. My background in electronics and software development for UAV systems, and environmental science, led me naturally to the application of UAVs and associated sensor platforms for environmental research and monitoring. I have since worked in both academia, and more recently, consulting, to develop novel techniques for efficient environmental monitoring at broad spatial scales.
