About Brad Fairley

Having left the corporate world behind, I recently established my own company, 5 Smooth Stones Restoration Inc., that allows me to continue my mission: improving the quality of habitat restoration work in Canada.I have established the first two fish habitat banks approved by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. I am actively promoting habitat banking as a way of improving the quality of stream restoration and habitat restoration work in Canada.I'm organizing events focused on sharing information within the stream restoration community in Canada. In November 2019, I organized and hosted a one-day symposium entitled "Lessons Learned from Stream Restoration in Other Jurisdictions" where 8 experts from the US presented on a range of topics. This symposium was attended by more than 100 practitioners and similar events will be planned for the future.I like to take on selective projects that help further my mission. For example, I'm working with DFO to develop protocols for post-construction monitoring of habitat restoration projects. I'm also working with clients interested in implementing habitat restoration projects using a design-build approach. I've had the opportunity to speak at numerous conferences across North America about stream restoration as both an attendee and an invited speaker. Additionally, I have provided expert testimony in court on stream restoration. As President of the RiverSHARED Organization, I'm dedicated to helping share information within the stream restoration community in North America.I'm also on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, which is actively involved in aquatic habitat restoration within Canada.I'm also on the Steering Committee and Policy and Program Committee of Aquatic Habitat Canada, which is dedicated to protecting and restoring aquatic habitat in Canada.A member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Branch of the International Erosion Control Association.I have funded a scholarship and travel prize for Graduate Students at McMaster University whose research focuses on Ecosystem Restoration and currently working with the University to fund a Research Chair in Ecosystem Restoration.
