  • Kitty Hawk
Flight Test Engineer | Test Pilot
    Kitty Hawk Dec 2019 - Aug 2020
    Palo Alto, Ca, Us
    • Defined and led flight test campaigns to confirm vehicle performance and flight envelope, while improving reliability• Performed detailed analysis of vehicle dynamics to improve our aerodynamics models, controls, and sensor reliance• Troubleshot anomalous vehicle behavior in real time• Managed test sites, overseeing all crew safety and task delegation, and maintained site functionality & network infrastructure• Built our environmental test standards and qualification campaigns from the ground up using DO-160G and MIL-STD-810G.• Defined critical bottom-line metrics, fed by extensive queries, to quantify vehicle reliability and max in-flight duty cycle.• Led efforts in developing FMEA and prioritized hardware and system redesign work to eliminate high probability and high severity failures.• Operated as flight test engineer and test pilot on a variety of test campaigns culminating in a novel electric VTOL aircraft that an individual could learn to pilot in just 20 minutes.
  • Spacex
Manufacturing Engineer | Crew Dragon Engines
    Spacex Jul 2016 - Sep 2018
    Hawthorne, California, Us
    • Operated in a highly multi-disciplinary role to develop the Draco rocket engine for Crew Dragon's in-space propulsion system. Engines provide attitude control, and orbital maneuverability, while also stabilizing the vehicle during re-entry and emergency aborts.• Led all manufacturing, testing and integration of the Crew Draco engine from initial development through NASA qualification - including all engine components, subsystems, higher level assemblies, and final vehicle integration.• Owned production of 30+ rocket engines for operational crewed missions, including all 100+ individual unique components (pintles, injector bodies, thrust chamber assemblies, nozzles, propellant valves, transducers, RTD's, insulation, propellant distribution manifolds, feed lines, etc).• Performed design and analysis of numerous tools to test engine components for flight.• Ran data acquisition, performed data reduction, investigated engine anomalies, and implemented design fixes.• Led a team of 10 technicians, covering both day and night shifts.• Qualified CT scanning as a NASA-accepted method for volumetric inspection of metallic welds (an industry first)
  • Usc Rocket Propulsion Laboratory
    Chief Propulsion Engineer
Usc Rocket Propulsion Laboratory Mar 2014 - May 2016
    Los Angeles, California, Us
    • Collaborated with 5 engineering leads to be the first student group to send a rocket to space (achieved in 2019)• Characterized the solid rocket propellant formula which powered the Traveler IV rocket past the Karman line• Developed standard operating procedures for propellant manufacturing, formulated new high-performance propellant chemistries, qualified new thermal protection system, developed an advanced pyrogen ignition system, and developed propellant vacuum casting system.
  • Mccauley Propeller
Blackworks Engineering Intern - Advanced Design & Development
    Mccauley Propeller May 2015 - Aug 2015
    Wichita, Kansas, Us
    • Invented and performed the clean-sheet design of a new type of propeller under McCauley Propeller Systems’ Blackworks division.• Modeled in CATIA, performed FEA and aero-analysis, built a prototype, and ran spin-table testing.• Assembled and led a three-person team to further develop the project, collaborated with mechanics, engineers, pilots and business leaders, hosted critical design reviews, performed customer analysis, did patent research and gave several presentations on the project including to the senior leadership team and an audience of over 500 people.• Blackworks is now pursuing a patent for our design.
  • Sikorsky
Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition - Project Lead
    Sikorsky Jul 2011 - Aug 2012
    Stratford, Connecticut, Us
•Competed in the Sikorsky Human-Powered Helicopter competition, designing and building a full-sized, functional rotorcraft• Researched and conducted trade studies on aspect ratios, blade taper, and geometric twist to minimize overall power requirement for the machine• Designed and built rotor blades using composite sandwiches of balsa wood, carbon fiber, XPS Foam, and E-glass - completed airfoil shape with reinforced ribs and a tensioned mylar skin with each blade spanning 12 feet from root to tip but weighing only 1.5 lbs.• Designed and built a power train comprised of a chain-sprocket drive, sprag clutches and a miter gear system for counter rotation of coaxial rotors, driven by pedals with a recumbent pilot.• Prize was eventually claimed by Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson of AeroVelo.
