I built our California bureau and have been running it for more than five years. I learned the issues and policy arena from scratch and have developed an institutional knowledge of government that enables me to dive deep into investigations to find the latest twist to complex and ongoing issues.Based in Sacramento, I manage the California edition of Agri-Pulse, producing a 1,000-word daily newsletter with original reporting, along with spot news stories and weekly feature articles with in-depth policy analysis.

I covered business research, including environmental transparency on Wall Street, workplace discrimination, the growth mindset for entrepreneurs and much more.

The World Food Center was a startup that functioned like a campus think tank. We lifted scientific excellence to the global stage for greater impact in strategic areas of food and ag research and innovation.I launching the Climate-Smart Story Project, a long-form publication focused on solutions to pressing food issues. I implemented the center's first communications plan, which included creating a content strategy, building a social media community, designing outreach materials and hiring and managing a team of talented contractors. I accomplished this on a tight budget, with short deadlines. I have nurtured professional relationships with campus communicators across specialties and units and collaborated with counterparts as far away as Uganda and in organizations as well known as the World Bank, the World Food Prize, the Dutch government and the UN FAO.

Within the Department of Plant Sciences, I covered the latest research from scientists tackling critical issues related to feeding the planet. I produced a drought podcast by tapping into a network of farm advisors to connect with ranchers across the state, who were at ground zero as the drought began to take hold in 2013.

What is the universe made of? How does it work? Where did it come from? The greatest minds in physics are harvesting, decaying and smashing particles at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in a quest to find answers. As a science writer, I dug into the details, working alongside scientists, to explain in plain English the remarkable discoveries.

In private language institutes, I taught English to a range of adult students – university undergraduates, business executives, government employees – in conversation classes and private lessons.The experience was the culmination of six years abroad, traveling through 40 countries while living and working in Alaska, England, Scotland and South Korea.
