I have focused my research and observations on how being effective listeners makes people more influential. In leading group seminars, working with teams, and in one-on-one coaching, I emphasize experimentation, applying specific communication models in areas such as assessing customer needs, negotiation, problem resolution, etc. Then practice sessions are recorded and carefully reviewed to reinforce productive actions and introduce or redirect toward more effective behavior.The bulk of my work has been with mid-to-large corporations, but I've had many projects with charitable organizations as well. While my primary objective has been to positively impact corporate performance, many attendees report that improved communication and negotiation at work lead to success at home and in their communities.I consider my most successful client projects to be those where we were able to generate cross-sectional involvement, for example, to involve all departments which impact customers in problem solving or training. Equally important is to engage all levels, such as conducting pilot training sessions with senior managers before enrolling their staff, and then bringing those managers back into later sessions to coach their associates.My work has dovetailed with quality programs such as the Malcolm Baldrige Award and Six Sigma, especially in the Baldrige Customer Service category, and the development of human-factors measures for analytical quality programs, i.e., how to gauge “soft” criteria such as customer satisfaction with problem resolution.
