CurrentI took part in a rigorous recruitment process whereby over 5000 applicants applied for the multiple award winning PoliceNow programme, which consisted of video interviews, psychometric testing, assessment centres and a final interview. Following this was an intense six-week summer academy in London where initial training was provided before being posted to Northamptonshire.My role as a Police Constable on the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Corby requires me to tackle long-standing problems and come up with solutions which prevent crime and protect people from harm. I regularly work with partner organisations such as Corby Borough Council when situations arise in which police powers or tactics aren’t appropriate. The role requires me to work dynamically and often be presented with situations where decisions are made under intense pressure whilst still being justified, accountable and aiming to protect members of public. The role of a constable is also target for public scrutiny due to the high standards expected of a police officer and there’s also an increased level of danger with the current terror threat therefore it’s imperative that I am professional at all times. A major aspect of my role is communicating well, both with colleagues in the Police force and the general public, to ensure that they understand decisions that I have made and also to get the bottom of issues which I’m investigating. Community engagement is vital for my role to ensure there’s a general confidence in the relationship with the police from members of my community. The role also requires leadership ability in numerous ways, whether that be taking charge of a potential crime scene and communicating effectively, managing PCSO’s and cadets on a regular basis or understanding organisational priorities and adjusting my workload accordingly to meet these objectives, particularly in the current economic and political climate where Policing is often under resourced.
