I am an international student, studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. I have just completed my BSc as of December 2024 and plan to begin my MSc in 2025. Before transferring, I was studying at Northern Illinois University in Illinois, USA.I also work part-time at the Centre for Materials Engineering (CME) at UCT, assisting researchers by designing various machines and apparatuses for use in their research. This is a broad description, but projects in the past have included a magnetic stirring device for chemical reactions under vacuum, refurbishing machines for sample preparation, and creating a system to adapt a tensile machine for plane strain compression testing. Many projects or required parts are manufactured in-house at our own workshop--it is my responsibility to design everything and to liaise with the workshop regarding its manufacture. In my final year of study for my BSc, my thesis was based on one of my ongoing projects at the CME: the automation of a manual desktop injection molding machine for scientific use. I developed an empirical relationship between the hydraulic pressure applied to the molten polymer and the electric current supplied to the motor. To do this, I designed the testing rig for taking measurements (mechanical and electrical design), determined an experimental plan, carried out the tests, and analyzed the data. I was chosen as one of the top three mechanical engineering students to present my thesis to the department and the external moderators.

Such engineering activities are diverse, but usually involve the design or modification of scientific equipment to be used in material tests and sample preparation. My work has enhanced the scope of lab capabilities—for example, an air-tight magnetic stirring device I developed facilitated stirring of chemical reactions under vacuum, and a microslice machine I refurbished increases the number of samples that can be cut at one time, speeding up the process of sample preparation. Other examples include an ongoing project automating a desktop injection molding machine and designing various grips, positioning devices, etc. for samples during mechanical testing. The work also includes a supervisory role, as the lab accommodates a few undergraduate interns for each summer and winter vacation. I am put in charge of designing their projects and supervising them during the process. Through this work I have also gained knowledge about materials science theory, especially concepts around metallurgy and the behavior of materials. Show less -
