I was the General Counsel for BlackRock's largest advisory subsidiary, managing over $1 trillion in client assets, and I led a 40 person global legal team responsible for advising the asset management business, institutional sales channel, BlackRock Solutions® technology platform, and FutureAdviser®, BlackRock’s robo-adviser. I had global responsibility for managing BlackRock’s intellectual property and IP enforcement. I advised the bank Board on strategic regulatory and corporate governance developments. My major accomplishments included:▪ Leading legal support on financial technology initiatives, including FutureAdviser®, CoRI ® and other initiatives.▪ Leading IP legal support on major BlackRock rebranding initiatives.▪ Globalizing the legal team supporting the institutional business to increase efficiency and provide a consistent global legal view.▪ Successfully spinning the iShares® fund complex and registered investment advisor out of national bank structure in corporate reorganization to reduce regulatory footprint.▪ Building successful working relationship with primary banking regulator, the Office of Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).▪ Increasing use of technology and streamlining workflow in the contracting and fund disclosure process to improve efficiency and client experience

I led the legal team responsible for delivering legal services to quant fund product groups and institutional channel. I was also responsible for all corporate legal issues including intellectual property, executive compensation, litigation & regulatory investigations, employment law, and M&A. Major accomplishments included:▪ Launching a series of quantitative Cayman hedge funds and advised senior management and fund boards on a range of securities and banking law, ERISA and tax issues.▪ I designed and drove implementation of new executive compensation programs based on stock appreciation rights and RSUs on non publicly traded securities. I also provided legal support on existing stock option plan and deferred compensation programs.▪ I developed and implemented a program for protecting intellectual property, including invention assignment and enhanced confidentiality agreements, and a data protection program. I led the enforcement of intellectual property rights globally.▪ I resolved several significant law enforcement investigations from agencies including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Antitrust Division, U.S. Dept. of Labor, the SEC and the OCC.▪ I drafted and negotiated intellectual property and data licenses and commercial agreements with financial service providers, external clients and vendors.Barclays Global Investors was acquired by BlackRock in December 2009.
