Responsible for meeting the communications needs of the Alpha-1 Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that seeks a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). Alpha-1 is an inherited condition that is passed from parents to their children through their genes. The condition may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age. I wrote, edited and published articles about Alpha-1 for print and electronic media. I also had day-to-day responsibility for updating the Foundation's website with current news and features of interest to the community. Additionally, I provide direction and supervision to the communications staff. I also created, organized, and actively promoted the Foundation’s presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social media. I drafted the organization's social media strategy in concert with the rest of the communications team.

Responsible for spearheading strategic communications initiatives, I also planned, coordinated, and managed the strategic outreach and internal messaging activities of Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone (RAK FTZ), a cost-effective gateway to fast-growing world markets with more than 8,000 international companies. Working in tandem with all sections of the Marketing Department and the rest of the organisation to create and communicate the free zone's messages, I ensured the overall continuity of the institution’s branding and image. Additionally, I evaluated media opportunities and provided editorial content to the media containing the organisation's key messages.Writing and editing press releases, key messages, speeches and talking points for spokespersons. This required translating technical jargon about sustainable urban design features into meaningful prose about why the buildings -- and, by extension, the company -- deserved this honor.Handled media relations for the inauguration of Shams 1, the world's largest operating concentrated solar power plant, which drew national and international reporters as well as the UAE president and other national leaders.Directed media relations for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2013, an international series of conferences and events that drew 30,000 people -- including several heads of state -- to the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

I edited their national and international stories for online and print from the Dubai newsroom of The National, an English-language daily newspaper based in Abu Dhabi.Directed and edited a four-part investigative series demonstrating that tap water was safe to drink in some parts of the United Arab Emirates, but was not even suitable for showers in other areas of the country.Additionally, supervised and edited an investigative package of stories revealing that air-conditioning units in the UAE are set at temperatures too low for comfort, health and the sustainable environment.

Transformed this weekly community newspaper from a publication riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, and with little distinction between opinion and news writing, into a credible, award-winning medium that frequently scoops the major dailies and TV stations in South Florida. Facilitated a partnership in conjunction with the journalism school at Florida International University. Liberty City Link allows students to cover inner-city neighborhoods for the paper as part of their studies. This helps them gain real-world journalism experience, and provides coverage of what is happening in a neglected part of town. The partnership has been covered favorably in Editor & Publisher magazine.

Trained young reporters and interns to be better writers, instructing them on breaking news coverage, news features, enterprise reporting and profiles of community leaders.I oversaw five reporters who covered small cities in Broward County, Florida from March 2003. I became the day assignment editor in April 2004, overseeing breaking news coverage, updating the website, supervising a team of general-assignment reporters and interns, and coordinating vacation schedules for all reporters in the Broward County newsrooms of The Miami Herald.

Wrote a series of investigative stories on racial discrimination against black city of Fort Lauderdale employees, leading to a lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice and several settlements with mistreated employees. The Justice Department and the city eventually signed a detailed legal agreement, ensuring that no other employees would be mistreated. I provided detailed coverage on a wrong-way highway crash between a drunken, white FBI agent and two young black men who were wrongly blamed for the crash that killed them. The coverage pressured the Florida Highway Patrol to reverse its determination, leading to a jail sentence for the FBI agent. This effort won me a Miami Herald in-house award.

Deerfield Beach, Fl, Us

Exposed the sweltering conditions of Delray Beach, Florida, public-housing residents who did not have air conditioning. My reports led to donations of air conditioners from the public, and a new policy from the housing authority to provide air conditioning in each unit.Also, wrote a series of investigative stories exposing differences in the quality of city services in black neighborhoods and white ones in Delray Beach. Most noted among these differences was the provision of paved alleyways in white neighborhoods, but dirt alleys in black communities. The stories pointed out that the city maintained paved alleys in white neighborhoods, but adjacent homeowners in black neighborhoods were responsible for cleaning and maintaining unpaved alleys, under threat of fines.

Helped keep a newspaper alive during a strike.I covered Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and other communities in Oakland County, in the Detroit suburbs.

Wrote a series of stories detailing the community efforts behind a group of men who travelled from central New Jersey to participate in the Million Man March, including riding with them on the bus to Washington, DC, and covering the march from their perspectives. Received service award from the NAACP for coverage of the black community.

Won a New Jersey Press Association “rookie of the year” award.Covered the Miss America Pageant.Spent two weeks inside classes and the lunchroom at Atlantic City High School to examine peer pressure against academic achievement, and how students were coping with it. Wrote a Sunday, front-page investigative piece about what children, parents, teachers and outside academic experts were saying about the issue, winning an in-house award. Also wrote an op-ed about the subject and how it had personally impacted my life.Wrote about a woman who had been wrongly jailed in a case of mistaken identity. She was later freed.
