As a mechanical engineer at SP Industries, I am tasked with the R&D of new products and processes, along with designing and planning projects, costs of machines and equipment, and working within the ERP system to develop BOMs for machines. Designing is done primarily in SolidWorks, where I am responsible for developing new designs and changes to existing products. I also design and modify equipment layouts, prints for manufacturing and for the customer, and work closely with production, sales and marketing to ensure our machines meet the high quality standards upheld at SP Industries.

In my role as senior mechanical engineer, I handle the design of products and processes for our wide range of CNC equipment, while working closely with purchasing, quality and other departments. This includes conceptual design, redesigns, creating and maintaining customer orders for machines (BoMs), work instructions for assemblies, carrying out various tasks in our ERP system and working to reduce costs on our existing designs. I carry out improvements to existing designs using engineering change notices, and I work closely with the floor and quality to ensure our current products are assembled with the highest quality. I also aid in the training and mentorship of new engineers on the team.

While working in the R&D department, my focus was designing new products and methods to improve the CNC machines assembled in Grand Rapids. This included taking designs from concepts to production, and localization of existing European designs to better suit the U.S. market. I collaborated with local colleagues in America and others at our German facilities on a day-to-day basis, discussing potential improvements or troubleshooting problems for our wide range of products.

Over the course of three semesters as an engineering intern, I designed products and tooling used for both air and coolant routing in locomotive engines. I also designed various water and heating ducts used in passenger rail cars. I often juggled numerous projects simultaneously, and I worked closely with R&D, CAD, production, purchasing and maintenance, solving real-world problems to ensure our products worked effectively and efficiently. Working with designs from the conceptual stage to full production led to a focus on design in my engineering career.

I prepped and installed vinyl designs, often working with the customer to ensure their satisfaction. The applications were very hands-on and attention to detail was paramount.
