I was entrusted with leading the accounting team for Saltgate's largest client after only 18 months as an Assistant Manager in said team.I was able to improve the team's efficiency through effective resource management, optimisation of system use and training of staff, such that the quarter end process took only 40% of the time it once did. We were therefore able to take on a substantial amount of additional work from other teams (as individuals left the business) leading to a cost saving of more than one million pounds per annum, all while client feedback on the output of the accounting team improved.Having learned from this experience just how powerful (and therefore valuable) systems are to a business, my interest in system use optimisation developed to the point that I would consider myself an expert user of Investran, Excel and Visual Basic; specifically the building and use of Report Wizard ("RW") hierarchies to facilitate report creation, formulas and pivot tables for converting data, and the coding of macros respectively.Saltgate acknowledged my expertise in this area, and as such, my role broadened to include general business optimisation, entailing a review of other teams' processes and using my knowledge of the above applications to ensure that outputs are created as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As an Assistant Manager, I was responsible for reviewing and analysing trial balances and supporting schedules on a monthly basis; preparing quarterly cash flow forecasts; and reviewing the quarterly and annual financial statements of one of the largest private equity firms in Europe.I was also responsible for the development of more junior members of the Private Equity team; setting them meaningful, challenging objectives and helping them to attain these objectives; in addition to engaging in discussions with HR on a quarterly basis regarding the career progression of said juniors.Finally, as an ex-auditor, I was assigned the role of lead audit contact and was required to explain some of the more complex areas of our accounting treatment. AUPs took place on a quarterly basis in addition to the annual audits, so I regularly engaged in technical discussions with auditors.

As a Senior I was expected to take full responsibility for the completion of the jobs I worked on, in addition to coaching and delegating/reviewing work to/from more junior members of staff and communicating any issues to both the client and managers. This often meant reporting directly to senior members of staff, including the Directors and Partners of the firm.My engagement portfolio was vast and continued to grow over the course of my audit career. I was lucky enough to gain extensive exposure to Private Equity clients, Trusts, Special Purpose Investment Vehicles and even Telecommunications businesses located on the island. This required me to be able to deal with a wide range of people from very different backgrounds across multiple industries.During my time at EY, I also took responsibility for organising social events and activities. This meant liaising with other organisations to arrange dates and numbers and then relaying this information internally.

I left school after completing my A-Levels and immediately began working in a high pressured environment among a peer group that were several years older than me, with the expectation that I would perform at the same level; an expectation that I consistently met and often exceeded.My initial role as an Associate had me learning quickly on the job while also studying for my ACCA qualification. During these first two years I developed my attention to detail and improved my ability to think about the risk associated with what I was doing in order to conclude on the balances we were auditing.
