Father. Founder. Survivor.I am, and have been, many things in life. And I hope to be many more. These things have shaped who I am and what I do.But one part of my story shaped me more than most.Following several seizures, my five-year-old son, Julius, was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I was shocked, scared and confused. I threw myself into my work. I felt it was my duty and the right thing to do. I wanted to provide for my family and ensure that there would be financial support in place to ensure the human support that Julius needed.In hindsight, I was wrong.I couldn’t stop; I wouldn’t stop. My focus was on providing for Julius. But this determined focus and associated stress meant I ignored the warning signs that my health was also at risk. I developed a life-threatening infection and narrowly escaped death.I owe my life to the NHS. Their diagnosis and treatment allowed me to cheat death and continue to be a father to a child desperately in need of every bit of family support available.No amount of financial support can replace a family member, especially a parent.The NHS is miraculous at diagnosing and treating illness, but it’s not equipped to provide the wider emotional and practical support that patients and their loved ones need. Diagnosing and treating serious illness is traumatic, leaving those involved fearful, confused and desperate.It is this journey, this story, that inspired me to set up The Julius Jones Trust. I want to give back, to share what I’ve learnt and to help other families in the same position as mine.This story is just beginning – will you join me for the next chapter?
