Researcher, Analyst, Manager

I served in a variety of analytic and management roles in risk analysis, risk management, statistical modeling, and economic analysis. Provided quantitative analyses, scientific, economic and other research products to solve client needs. Products ranged from simple analyses to extremely complex probabilistic models, as the need dictated, for scientific, public information, public health, regulatory, and enforcement needs, including:1. Oversaw a scientific modeling program for 5 years which provided modeling products to support regulatory programs, scientific studies, and public outreach efforts. For example, our probabilistic models replaced less precise and less informative predictions for the most complex pesticide assessments in the history of the Agency; advanced the science of assessing exposures of the US population and sub-groups to air pollutants; provided estimates of risks at neighborhood levels across the US for a variety of ambient and household level toxic substances. Managed up to 17 senior researchers and outside collaborators from leading academic and research institutes in the country. Communicated and defended results in high stakes public and legal settings. Hired and supported staff who became highly successful, including one who was awarded the outstanding young researcher internationally despite not having worked in the field until joining my group.2. Led dozens of analyses which were published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and public reports, supported multi-billion dollar regulatory decision, prepared briefings for senior management up to including the EPA Administrator, reports to Congress, legal proceedings, and provided analyses to assess risk management options and estimate costs of regulatory options. For example, led an analysis of risks to childhood lead exposure which was used to set national standards and was called "one of the best by EPA in years" by economists at US Office of Management and the Budget (OMB).

Apr 1987 - Apr 2014

Senior Statistician

Washington Consulting Group, Inc.

Washington Dc-Baltimore Area

Provided consulting services and contract research for government and private clients. The majority of the work was analytic, providing statistical analyses, comparison of management alternatives, sample surveys, study designs, and related projects. I was responsible for analysis, communication with clients, budget management, staff supervision, business development, and report writing (lots of report writing), with progressively more responsibilities over time. My largest client was the US Environmental Protection Agency, where I went to work after this.

Aug 1984 - Apr 1987

Mathematical Statistician

Washington Dc-Baltimore Area

I worked in a team to develop products for the Census Bureau and provided statistical consulting services to support other statisticians. My largest project there developed an approach to predict economic and sociologic categories from one census to another in order to help outside researchers analyze occupational and industrial changes over time. We used Bayesian approaches and reflected the uncertainty in predictions; the core methodology of the approach was published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the premier US publication in the field.

Jul 1983 - Aug 1984

Statistical Consultant

Madison, Wisconsin, United States

Provided statistical consulting for researchers in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The faculty members and Ph.D. students were conducting research, and I supported the research in the study designs and statistical analysis approaches. I provided the sole statistical consulting which helped approximately 100 students get their doctorate degrees.
