Mentor: Harry Gray· Designed, synthesized, and examined new manganese and rhenium molecular electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction to CO using rational design to add pendent proton donors, resulting in both reduced overpotential requirements and increased catalytic rates than the standard catalyst.· Designed and developed novel porphyrin-based multi-metallic molecules with high charge-density (6 added electrons/molecule) for electrocatalytic applications and energy storage. Results suggest they could be a new combinatorial platform for broader catalyst development.· Supervised, trained, mentored, and designed multi-year projects for two undergraduates in the areas of synthesis, electrochemistry, and catalysis in conjunction with the Caltech SURF internship program. These resulted in multiple articles submitted for peer-reviewed publication.· Used root cause analysis to develop a new synthetic route for insertion of gold ions into corroles that increased product yield 10X, decreased cost, and increased purity.· Built a UV-Ozone surface cleaner to support the Solar Army outreach program, saving the program $4000 compared to commercial instruments.· Communicated research findings at national / international conferences.

This led to a new mechanistic understanding of surface dynamics and solvation.· Studied the surface bonding of metal oxides functionalized with new anchoring groups using FTIR, NMR, and electrochemical techniques, and worked as a team with computational chemists to reconstruct the surface morphology.· Solved a dispute in the scientific literature. Synthesized hydroxamate titanium molecular clusters as models for bulk material surfaces, analyzed them using FTIR, single crystal XRD, UV-Visible spectroscopy, and compared them to thin film binding studies and theoretical predictions to suggest the correct surface binding motif.· Synthesized molecular light-absorbers, assembled them on porous metal oxide films, and examined their solar energy conversion and kinetic processes in dye-sensitized solar cell designs. This led to new design principles and structure-function correlations.· Studied the emission properties of phenazine and corrole analogues for applications in solar and LED materials.· Communicated research findings at internal meetings and at national/international conferences.

I showed that organo-silatranes provide a simple method of forming silyl ether monolayers on metal oxides without observable polymerization. These monolayers are very stable to alkaline hydrolysis compared to more widely used surface anchors. I also studied and compared the charge transfer dynamics of dyes bound to metal oxides using transient absorption spectroscopy.

Beyond my chemistry research, I was able to gain training in technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and science policy in both domestic and international landscapes.· Synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles and developed colloidal formulations for preparing thin films.· Used electrochemical and chemical oxidation methods to synthesize new semiconductive polymers, and analyzed their properties using UV-Visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, FTIR, and HPLC-GPC.· Examined charge transfer dynamics of semiconducting polymer thin films in aqueous and organicsolvents using electrochemical methods, showing rate-limiting counter-anion charge flow.· Pioneered the development of organo-silatranes as a new method to functionalize metal oxide surfaces with stable monolayers without aggregation. The monolayers showed wider pH stability than common anchoring groups. This resulted in a dye-sensitized solar cell stable in alkaline aqueous conditions, and yielded record high efficiencies for SnO2 based systems.· Developed a procedure to study the surface chemistry of functionalized porous metal oxide thin films using FTIR and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy.· Assembled and tested semiconductive polymer thin film and dye-sensitized solar cell devices.· Synthesized CdSe quantum dots using microwave synthetic methods for a multidisciplinary project involving high-capacity binary information storage.· Supervised and trained multiple graduate and undergraduate researchers, and organized a graduate student's master's thesis project.· Owned four instruments (FTIR, spin coater, HPLC-GPC, potentiostat w/ RDE)· Communicated research findings at internal meetings and at a national conference of the American Chemical Society.
