Software ArchitectLucent Technologies 2001 - 2006UMTS RNC Architecture team were responsible for defining the software architecture and design of the UMTS 3G RNC. As a software architect I was responsible for specifying the design of the RNC as a UML behavioural model which was used by development and test teams to implement the RNC product. The designs required detailed understanding of system requirements based upon 3GPP technical specifications. The UML Model was originally created in Telelogic Tau and later defined in Rhapsody. My specialisation was in control plane defining the call processing behaviour for inter-working signalling procedures between the Mobile devices (RRC), nodeb (NBAP), peer RNC (RNSAP), and Core Networks (RANAP/PCAP/SCCP) and defining interactions with lower layer signalling protocols for management of user plane on the RNC. During this time I was involved in the software design to support new and evolving 3G radio technologies such as HSPA.To improve understanding and navigation of the UML model, which contained a vast number of use-cases required for the RNC design, I provided a web-based navigation tool in Java and HTML to the team to support fast look-up and search of use-cases. This tool was widely used by RNC architecture, development and test.

Specialist Test EngineerLucent Technologies Sep 2001 - Feb 2002Developed integration test plans as a member of the UMTS RNC Network Element Test team and created corresponding test scripts. After executing these test scripts, interpreted the results and liaised with systems engineers and development to solve issues found during testing.

Specialist Software EngineerLucent Technologies 2000 - 2001As lead technical engineer for software development of signalling for 2G MSC, I was requested for a small team of specialists seconded to Hyannis, Massachusetts for several months to spearhead development of a new UMTS 3G MSC. The focus of the team was to define the software architecture and develop the prototype for a 3G MSC using Lucent soft-switch platform. My main responsibility was development of the inter-working between a 3G Wireless RNC (RANAP/H.248/Megaco) and ISUP signalling for inter-working to mobile operators existing network infrastructure using C and proprietary language PPL (Programmable Protocol Language) with VxWorks operating system. This role involved gaining rapid knowledge of soft-switch, 3G UMTS architecture and PPL. After completion of the secondment I transferred this knowledge to the UK-based R&D team for continuing development of the 3G MSC product, and to support other soft-switch functionality for inter-working ISUP with SIP to support BT 21st Century Network (21CN) transition. To facilitate debugging of the soft-switch, essential to development for fixing issues found during test, I implemented a Web-based tool using HTML and Java for translating log files into sequence diagrams from which system behaviour could be analysed.

Principal Software EngineerLucent Technologies Network Systems Uk Limited 1996 - 2000As a member of a department responsible for development of telecoms signalling, I was software development lead engineer for a team implementing SS7 ISUP and TUP signalling for 2G (GSM) Mobile networks. This required implementing software in C with Unix-RTR operating system to support interoperability of customer specific signalling variants supported in the existing telecoms operators network infrastructure with the standard mobile network signalling systems used by GSM base-stations. This role require close collaboration with a multinational team to support major mobile operators in many different countries. -
Senior Software EngineerAt&T 1992 - 1996Dallas, Tx, UsI was a member of a team responsible for design and development of Billing Software on the 5ESS International Switching System. This involved producing detailed high and low level designs from customer requirement specifications, coding of the design using C, code inspection and scenario based walk-through, unit test using simulators and on-target system test. Some additional roles of software development were to assist system test teams in identifying and fixing issues with new software features, and assisting customer support teams during acceptance of the software release, including urgent implementation of fixes and patches to support field trial and deployments. After a two month secondment to a software development team in Bell Labs based in Naperville, Illinois, I became lead engineer for the UK-based development team as specialist in development of customer specific detailed billing software for GSM/2G mobile networks. This included responsibility for project estimation, planning and management and mentoring to grow the expertise of the local UK-based team of new graduate engineers, and mentoring engineers based in Spain and Poland. -
Automated Software Test EngineerAt&T Network System Uk 1989 - 1991Dallas, Tx, UsAutomated Test was being investigated for the AT&T 5ESS Telephone Switching System when I joined AT&T as a graduate. I was a member of a team responsible for introduction and support of the 5ESS Automated Test System. For this role I was required to design and implement core test script functions using Unix Korn Shell to automatically control a 5ESS switch and test equipment for simulating phone devices and TUP and ISUP signalling protocols. During the execution of test scenarios my role was to perform post-test analysis and report on script results to the system test and development team. I was also responsible for implementing the change management system used for managing version control of the automation scripts.5ESS remote testing capability was a follow on to test automation, and I designed and supported a fully functional ISDN phone simulator application with remote access. This application simulated every function of an ISDN phone and was critical to UK-based system testers for remotely testing a 5ESS switch located in labs based in Naperville, Illinois. -
Audio Research EngineerKef Electronics Ltd 1985 - 1988As a member of the research team for KEF Electronics I designed and implemented a software application for project Archimedes to simulate Room Acoustics for investigating the influence of rooms upon loudspeaker performance. I was also responsible for evaluation, design, implementation and fault analysis of test equipment used by the Archimedes project and the support of technical introduction for new products.http://www.eurekanetwork.org/project/-/id/105
