  • Pastmapper
    Founder
    Pastmapper 2011 - 2016
Pastmapper began as a passion project in my spare time, but ultimately was the impetus to launch my career in software product management. As a history buff, I had often wished that historical map information (places and things that no longer existed) could be as easily-accessible as current-day map information (places and things that exist today). Pastmapper was my effort to accomplish that.I became familiar with geospatial web development, including QGIS and the Google Maps API, building my own Maptiler server to serve up map data from 1853 San Francisco.I manually georectified USGS Coast Survey maps using QGIS, and extracted historical business directory data from documents on Archive.org. I built a rudimentary geocoder to compensate for the fact that addresses in San Francisco prior to the 1870s used a different numbering scheme and therefore could not be reconciled to lat-long pairs by modern geocoders.Pastmapper allowed users to switch back and forth between the present day and the past, with outdated building outlines, place names, and a different coastline. Users could view and filter businesses listings from 1853, with data shown on the map from a MediaWiki database to store and display directory entries. In order to expedite the massive digitization effort, I built a campaign powered by Amazon Mechanical Turk to employ humans to correct the OCR discrepancies presented by the scans of the original directory documents.Additional accomplishments:• Generated press coverage from Huffington Post, Engadget, BBC, Design Boom• Conducted historical data research partnership with NYU Digital Humanities undergraduate class• Developed and launched iOS check-in game app in partnership with Doubledutch to encourage discovery of 7600 historical business listings• Hosted developer events to engage with digital humanities community
