A catastrophic weather event caused a collapse of bee colonies that could not be recovered. All resources were collected and concentrated into beef production. My experience working in the "death and dying" industry was rewarding, eye opening, and really "pushed the envelope" on what I thought I could do in a career. I spent most of my days assisting the deceased, assisting their families, assisting with pre-arrangements, and assisted with arranging funeral plans. I worked directly with the deceased from death to burial. Daily tasks involved picking up and transporting the deceased from homes, medical institutions and other miscellaneous locations back to the funeral home. I also preformed embalming, dressing, and casketing of the deceased. Setting up and attending visitations were also a daily tasks as well as assisting in funerals and burials. I also have experience in dealing with organ donation and autopsy. I have observed multiple autopsies at the VA Medical Center in Madison, WI and the Dane County Crime Lab in Madison, WI.

My daily role consisted in the assistance of the planning and construction of cable plants. I am proficient in many skills in the field. The main tool that I use in my job is a directional drill. This is a machine that drills a horizontal rod underground to place inter-duct underground in the attempt to bypass roads, parking lots, rivers and anything else that a cable plow cannot plow through or around. My job was to plan the placement of the directional drill and plan where the destination of drill "head" will end up at the far side of the "bore." After setup, my job is to take measurements and judgements of the drill "head" underground and determine what corrections need to be made by "drill operator" to get the drill head to it's desired destination. This takes a dynamic set of skills that are can be intimidating and difficult to master. It takes patients, planning, forward thinking, problem solving, and the ability to be flexible or abandon a plan to get the job done effectively and correctly. This is a high stress position that has many daily hazards. I am also in charge of strict planning and preparation that is required to create a "safe" working environment for both the drill operator, myself and for all laborers on the job site. My position also included the installation of fiber optic cable, setup and splicing fiber optic cable, termination of fiber optic cable and indoor termination of copper low voltage communication cables.

My role as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the hospital setting (Neuroscience Rehabilitation) was similar to the nursing home setting but with some wonderful new experiences and challenges. My job became much more involved with my patients on many levels. I now assisted with "activities of daily living" as well as the incorporation of physical, occupational, and speech therapies. I learned hands on experience in different therapy techniques and medical equipment that I have never been exposed to before, I loved learning every bit of education that I could get in the hospital. I played a larger role in the recovery of each and every patient that I worked with. My role as a professional in my field grew as took on more responsibilities. I was a primary CNA staff trainer and educator. I became part of a committee that was created to improve the efficiency of the rehab unit. I created 3 different protocols to increase the response time for staff members to assist patients. I was awarded with 3 separate awards for "Outstanding Achievement" due to the implementation of my new protocols and procedures. I was also awarded many "Star" awards for going above and beyond in my role in the Neurosciences. Star awards are given by peers and patients. Lastly, rehabilitation is very different then most units in a hospital due to the length of stay of rehab patients; it was not uncommon for a patient to remain in rehabilitation for months. These patients would become bored easy so I created an activity group that allowed patients to come together at night to play games and socialize with other patients and staff. This became a very successful program that was utilized by a large number of our patients. If you always remember that the patient ALWAYS comes first then a career in the medical field can be very fruitful and fulfilling.

My role as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the nursing home setting consisted of assisting residents perform their "activities of daily living." These activities include feeding, dressing, hygiene, exercise, elimination, and communication. This role was one of the greatest ways I could have started out my working career. This role allowed me to be who I am as a person and a professional. I was allowed autonomy to get my work done in a very efficient manner and at a high level of quality. I was the go-to individuals for all nursing staff and residents alike; if there was something that needed to be done efficiently, correctly, and with resident's dignity in mind then I was the staff member that was called upon. One of my greatest assets in the medical field is my ability to see residents as people, many healthcare professionals tend to separate the person from the resident.
