Systems And Software Development Manager - Rds Open Source At Amazon Web Services (Aws)
This role has pivoted away from a much of the devops role that I once played, moving heavily into a software development manager role. Within this role I have built out and manage a double figure high performance team with a direct report leader. In this role I own and manage 2 distinct business areas leading 5 squads. 1/ Ownership of the operating system which runs on all Linux based engines (all but SQL Server). Under this business we test, secure improve and release new operating systems for over 2 million databases. I have the responsibility of major and minor operating system upgrades and coordination with each of the RDS engines and improving the business ability to move quickly with new releases through DevOps best practices. 2/ Internal applications and data insights. Under this business I own 4 squads. My primary customers are internal (our products and decisions influence external customers also), who require and demand detailed insights into their RDS business units. These insights are developed through a multi- disciplined team, focused on high throughput and quality, low latency distributed data pipelines that are multi layered cleansing the data for user consumption. Through generation of these insights, it enables me to influence the RDS’s businesses roadmap and priorities in partnership with GM’s and other snr. leaders. I also built and own additional critical tooling developed that is an in-house benchmarking service that integrate with RDS engines and OS's ensuring that our releases are held to a high bar.
Head Of Devops, Systems Development Manager - Mysql, Mariadb And Aurora Mysql (Mma)
This is the same role as stated below however, I headed back to Sydney, AUS to continue this role. In this role I built out three high performance DevOps teams across three time zones. I managed a small leadership team and numerous technical leads reporting into to myself. My organisation was a lean high performing 26-person team. I owned the operations for Aurora MySQL, MySQL and MariaDB, these services are a multi-billion dollar business.I lead and drove the management customer and automated alarming tickets, driving events (outages), service operating costs and leading weekly metrics reviews in search of ongoing improvements to operating our services. In this role I was also the driving force in getting Aurora to provide a public SLA to our customers, devising the first iteration of the availability measurement while providing mechanisms for product managers to converse with customers about their availability goals.Specific to the DevOps, I owned building out new AWS regions for Aurora (AWS’s “fastest growing service of all time”), along with building and supporting critical internal tooling and automation that improved speed and quality of releases.

Snr. Operations Manager
As a snr. Operations manager, my roles was split into three functions, first and foremost a people manager, this included ongoing hiring, performance management and promotion. Second, was to look for opportunities, these included process improvements, tooling improvements, training and KPI improvements. With respect to KPI’s and engineer metrics, I was a trailblazer that was able to influence leadership and shape a global team of 500+ engineers. The third area of responsibility; was profile owner (a profile is a collection of AWS services). As a global profile leader, I took on the responsibility and managed 16 AWS services. Operations Manager
I was hired as one of two founding operations managers for the AWS Premium Support in Sydney (Australia). I started in this role with less than 20 engineers on hand; I played a major role in partnering with our recruiting team to increase our velocity of hiring without compromising on my high standards. It was my responsibility to ensure that we adopted global processes yet ensure that I was leading a team fitting the Australian culture. I would frequently share our success as a team with the global support leadership to help improve the support business through these implementations.
